Georgia Aquarium Announces New Shark Cage Dive and Shark and Ray Immersion Experiences

Is adrenaline your middle name? Is fear not a factor? Have you long yearned to interact with formidable sharks? Well, the Georgia Aquarium may be the trepidation station you seek.

As shared in a recent press release, the renowned Atlanta aquarium is debuting two exciting new shark experiences as part of the largest expansion since the aquarium opened in 2005. Inside the new main exhibit (rendering above), guests will have the opportunity to participate in two shark experiences, the Shark Cage Dive and Shark & Ray Immersion (click the links for more information and requirements for entry).

In the Shark Cage Dive, you'll put on a provided wet suit and get to see sharks in the water as well as enjoy an educational presentation about the creatures. All tours are led by a staff member and you don't need to be SCUBA certified to participate but you must meet age, height, and weight requirements, as well as have a minimum level of physical dexterity. Tours are scheduled to start on January 1, 2021, and you can reserve your tickets now here.

For the Shark & Ray Immersion, you'll also sport a provided wet suit and enter the water with the animals (like the shark cage dive, this is not a free swim experience). There will be a staff member with you at all times, and guests will also learn about sharks during an educational presentation. To participate, you must meet the age, height, and weight requirements. The program is slated to start November 2, 2020, and you can reserve your tickets now here.

Both programs will be limited to up to four guests to allow for proper social distancing and require mask-wearing (in the shark cage dive experience, you can remove the mask once you're in the cage.)

If a full-fledged swimming experience is what you crave, the aquarium also runs the "Journey with Gentle Giants" and "Dive with Gentle Giants" programs where you can swim or dive with whale sharks, manta rays, and other marine animals. There's also a "Rebreather Dive Program" that uses some of the newest rebreather equipment (a special type of diving gear) on the market.
