A Gerard Colcord-Designed Chateau in Los Angeles Hits the Market for $16.9 Million
The late architect Gerard Colcord left quite a mark on Southern California throughout his storied career. Often referred to as “Hollywood’s society architect,” Colcord designed hundreds of residences across Los Angeles, including homes designed for or later owned by a slew A-listers such as Madonna, Harrison Ford, and Richard Chamberlain. Now one of the late architect’s creations has resurfaced on the market for just shy of $17 million.
Located in Palos Verdes Estates, about 30 miles from downtown L.A., the 6,872-square-foot chateau-inspired home is listed with Lily Liang of Strand Hill Properties/Forbes Global Properties. The oceanfront abode, initially dubbed Les Ailes de la Mer (translating to The Wing of the Sea), sits on a whopping 33,000-square-foot lot with breathtaking views of the southern California coastline that stretch all the way to Malibu.

Originally built in 1970, the property sits behind a gate that leads directly to an expansive motor court paved with stone. The elaborate spread takes cues from a French country-style home, and internally, the place is loaded with period details like plaster ceilings, ornate moldings, custom-milled pieces, leaded glass windows, parquetry flooring, and plenty of wrought iron accents.

Altogether, the mansion comprises seven bedrooms, seven full bathrooms, and two half baths. On the main floor, you’ll find a spacious living room decked out with French doors that open up to a private outdoor terrace. Additionally, this level holds a formal dining room, a library, and a recently remodeled chef’s kitchen with a pantry and top-of-the-line appliances. Plus, the primary suite has its own dedicated wing, complete with his and her baths and access to the dwelling’s garden and backyard pool.
Another bedroom and bathroom are tucked away on the lower level. Here, you’ll also find a wine cellar and an entertainment room kitted out with a super cool rock fireplace. Meanwhile, the second level holds the rest of the sleeping quarters.
“It is truly a rare opportunity not to be missed,” notes the listing. Colcord, who died in 1984, flourished in an array of architectural styles, from Hollywood Regency to Spanish Hacienda. Today, his work can be found in Los Angeles’s Brentwood, Bel Air, and Westwood neighborhoods and still attracts big-name entertainers. Most notably, Reese Witherspoon and Ryan Phillippe owned one of his estates prior to their split. Nicolas Cage also famously moved into a Colcord-designed English Tudor mansion that was formerly owned by both Dean Martin and Tom Jones.
