German Shepherd Puppy Spends First Birthday in the Shelter Days Before Finding His Forever Home

If I could, I'd use every wish I'll ever make to manifest loving homes for every pet who needs one. Whether it's wishing on a shooting star or blowing out the candles on a birthday cake, it couldn't hurt to wish for better lives for these animals--just in case it comes true! Until that miracle can happen, though, there are thousands of selfless people who are working tirelessly to rescue and rehome as many pets as possible.

Every now and then, though, a wish really does come true! Just ask the folks at the Australian Animal Protection Society in Melbourne, Australia. They recently watched one of their residents go home with his forever family only days after celebrating his first birthday, and no one could be happier! Simba is a big, beautiful dog who waited patiently for the right people to find him, and a little touch of birthday magic sure didn't hurt.

Take a look at how the shelter helped the birthday boy celebrate on January 16!

Happy Birthday, Simba! This handsome German Shepherd is as graceful as can be, but at one-year-old, he still has a lot of that infamous puppy energy. Fortunately, giving him lots of space to run and lots of dog toys to play with will be wonderful ways to start giving him the fun life he deserves.

And it seems like he's found a couple who can give that to him! On January 18, just two days after his birthday, big dog Simba went home with a young couple who could keep up with his energy, size, and love.

It seems like the perfect 'once upon a time' for this dog with a Disney-inspired name, don't you think? His new mum was all smiles as they walked out of the shelter together, and their very first family photo was as cute as can be. Clearly, this former shelter dog lucked out!

When Considering Adopting a Pet, Be Realistic About What You Can Provide

I love hearing about adoption stories like this one because not all dogs get adopted as easily as others. Simba waited a while to find his forever home thanks to his large size and breed (many housing companies include German Shepherds on their banned breeds list), but also because many potential adopters don't feel they have what it takes to care for him. And that's completely fair!

This young, large dog definitely requires much more exercise, space, and even food than smaller pups, and some people may not be able to meet his needs. This is why it's so important for potential adopters to be realistic about what they can and can't provide to a new pet! Planning ahead and being realistic will make a successful adoption much more likely--which everyone will be grateful for.
