Gillian Anderson Makes Bold Declaration About 'The Crown' Covering Royals' Cancer Battles
Gillian Anderson
Gillian Anderson weighed in on whether she believes The Crown should return so that the show can continue its portrayal of the royal family up to the present day.
The hit Netflix series began with the start of Queen Elizabeth II’s reign and ended late last year with its sixth season, which covered the death of Princess Diana and the early days of Prince William’s relationship with Kate Middleton.
While show creator Peter Morgan has said there will be no Season 7, many fans were disappointed to learn that the historical drama wouldn’t cover more recent events within the royal family. But Anderson, 55, told The Sun the show was right to end when it did.
“I think it probably ended at the right spot,” said Anderson, who played former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher during the show’s fourth season. In her view, the show “was getting too close” to current events.

The Sex Education actress, who won an Emmy Award for her portrayal of Thatcher, said the “least that we can do” as King Charles III and the Princess of Wales both battle cancer is to give the royals the “bit of peace and quiet” they requested.
“I think in this instance with this latest double whammy of news, the least that people can do is to give them a bit of a break and for them to process this as the human beings that they actually are,” the X-Files alum told the British tabloid.

The two cancer diagnoses came to light earlier this year. Exactly what types of cancer the royals are each battling is not publicly known.
In early February, Buckingham Palace announced that the king was diagnosed with cancer after he underwent treatment for an enlarged prostate in January. He began treatment shortly thereafter.
Meanwhile, Middleton underwent what Kensington Palace described as a “planned” abdominal surgery in mid-January. Tests conducted after the surgery identified cancer, prompting her medical team to advise a chemotherapy treatment. After weeks of wild speculation about her health, the princess revealed her cancer diagnosis in a video message the palace released on March 22.
