Girl Scout Cookies May Cost You More This Year—Here’s Why
People who are eagerly awaiting the next season of Girl Scout cookies might want to save up a little more money this time around, as prices are reportedly increasing this year.
The Girl Scouts Heart of the Hudson New York State chapter reportedly shared a message with the local Girl Scouts community recently announcing the rise of price from $5 to $6 per box, as reported by CNN.
“In order to combat rising production and material costs, GSHH will be increasing the price of all cookie packages to $6.00," wrote the chapter's interim CEO. "We expect our neighboring councils to announce similar increases in the coming weeks and months.”
The CEO also referenced higher costs for the cookie supplier, Little Brownie Bakers, and the Girl Scouts chapter itself, adding, “Unfortunately, both LBB and GSHH are not immune to inflation, and costs have risen for all aspects of the business."
A spokesperson for the Girl Scouts of the USA told CNN that each Girl Scout council, of which there are currently 111, decides how much the cookies are going to cost locally.
"In some instances, councils are faced with the tough decision to raise the prices, though prices have remained steady in many areas for a number of years," they went on.
Along with the Hudson chapter, the Girl Scouts of Eastern Massachusetts announced its price increase to CBS affiliate WBZ-TV, citing "costs associated with food production, labor, and transportation" as the reason behind the decision.
Last year, one chapter in Louisiana and another in New York increased the price to $6, but many more are expected to follow this year.
Previously, certain variations of Girl Scout cookies, like S’mores and Toffee-Tastic, were $6, while the rest were priced at $5. With the increase, all of the offered cookies will be $6.
Despite the slight rise in prices, fans of Girl Scout cookies are still excited to get their hands on some boxes, with classics like Thin Mints and Trefoils on offer, as well as newer variations like the Adventurefuls.
