'Girls5eva' Moves to Netflix: Everything to Know About Season 3

Girls5eva is the latest cult-favorite show to get canceled by one company but saved by another—and fans of the titular fictional girl group couldn’t be happier. In October 2022, the TV powers-that-be renewed the Peacock original series for a third season but announced that the show’s new home would be Netflix.

“We are thrilled to announce that our reunited girl group will be re-reunited at Netflix. We are so thankful to everyone at the streamer who fell in love with our music-filled comedy,” Girls5eva’s executive producers said in a joint statement after the show’s renewal. “We cannot wait to introduce Dawn, Wickie, Summer, and Gloria to the global Netflix audience. Well, not fully introduced—if you look closely, Girls5eva can be seen in the background of the Woodstock ’99 documentary setting a porta potty on fire.”

The comedy follows the members of Girls5eva, a one-hit wonder girl group from the 1990s who reunite after they get an unexpected chance at a comeback thanks to a younger artist sampling their most famous song. Girl groups are called girl groups for a reason, though, and the women of Girls5eva quickly learn that it’s hard to juggle pop stardom with the vagaries of adulthood.

Busy Philipps, who plays Summer (the self-proclaimed “hot one” in the group), has said she can’t wait for Girls5eva fans new and old to see what’s coming in the new episodes. “I love what happens this season. There are going to be some pretty amazing guest stars, and I'm super excited for this season and the chance to get to continue to do the show on Netflix,” she told Parade in March 2023. “Hopefully a lot of people who weren't able to catch it when it was first on Peacock are going to be able to see it now.”

After losing out on the chance to tour with Collab, Girls5eva decides to embark on their own tour. They have a new album, Returnity, to promote, but the rest of their career is in shambles. “With no plan, tour manager, or venues secured, the ladies pile into a van and hit the great unknown, doing their damnedest to promote their album and get back on top,” reads the official description for the season. “In the process, Girls5eva will grapple with life on the road, see their relationships tested, play a billionaire’s birthday party, sow their oats, confront parents they believe held them back, cross paths with the biggest pop star on the planet, and question if they really want ‘the big time’ again. Will Girls5eva fast-track their comeback and sell their tour documentary in the process? Or will the road destroy them?”

Who is in the Girls5eva Season 3 cast?

Sara Bareilles (Dawn)

Sara Bareilles, a real-life singer-songwriter, stars as Dawn, who calls herself the “chill one” in Girls5eva. Since Season 2 of Girls5eva wrapped up, Bareilles has appeared on Broadway in Gutenberg! The Musical! and Into the Woods. In 2023, she won her second Grammy for the Into the Woods cast album and appeared in the film version of her musical Waitress, which she cowrote with Jessie Nelson. Also in 2023, Bareilles announced her engagement to Joe Tippett, who starred in the American Repertory Theater production of Waitress.

Busy Philipps (Summer)

Busy Philipps stars as Dawn, Girls5eva’s so-called hot one (her words). Philipps has recently appeared in Search Party, With Love and Single Drunk Female. In January 2024, she’s set to star as Mrs. George in the film adaptation of the Mean Girls musical.

Paula Pell (Gloria)

Paula Pell stars as Gloria, the “always working” member of Girls5eva who became a dentist after the band’s demise. Pell, who previously worked as a writer on Saturday Night Live, can also be heard on Big Mouth (she voices Barbara Glouberman, Lola's couch pillow and Bubbe). In 2023, she starred in an episode of Not Dead Yet and appeared in the Disney Channel Original Movie The Slumber Party.

Renée Elise Goldsberry (Wickie)

Broadway veteran Renée Elise Goldsberry plays Wickie, the “fierce one” in the group who began working as an airport employee after Girls5eva’s heyday. Goldsberry recently starred as Mallory Book in the Disney+ series She-Hulk: Attorney at Law and appeared in the 2021 Netflix adaptation of Tick, Tick … Boom! In 2023, she starred in the Public Theater’s Shakespeare in the Park production of The Tempest.

Other recurring actors and guest stars who could appear in Season 3 include Ashley Park, Andrew Rannells, Tina Fey, Grey Henson, Janine Brito, Amy Sedaris, Neil Flynn, Daniel Breaker and Jonathan Hadary.
