When you’re out riding on the trail, one of the worst things you can experience is wanting, or needing, more of something; More water, more food, more fitness etc. Proper planning and training can take care of the above three, but you also shouldn't be wanting more out of your gear while mountain biking. The Giro Arc Short with base liner will not leave you, or any level mountain biker, wanting more. Made with a polyester ripstop fabric, this short can withstand a just-gonna-send-it riding style, while the breathable, cushioned liner will keep you comfortable during longer rides and the midsummer heat. This short also features velcro waste straps for finding your perfect fit and a zipper pocket for keeping your phone safe while you’re crushing trails.

Other Giro Arc Shorts

The Giro Arc shorts come in men’s and women’s versions, and there is a with- and without-base-liner option for each gender. The non-liner versions are $20 less expensive ($80) than the with-liner versions, but each model utilizes the same versatile outer short.

Why You'll Love Them

This short is great for a variety of reasons, but the best part about them is the form-fitting liner that delivers bib-level comfort beneath a rip-resistant polyester shell. The liner fits like a pair of snug underwear, or spandex briefs that basketball and football players often wear beneath their gear, but the chamois is cycling-specific and helps combat the saddle-induced discomfort that so many riders experience. Giro’s liner also has some moisture-wicking qualities to keep everything cool during hot rides, and a fly opening in the men’s liner allows for quick, on-trail pit stops (be sure the trail or area you’re riding does not prohibit such actions).

Test Impressions

I am a roadie-turned-mountain-biker that began road cycling several years ago with traditional cycling bibs. When I first started mountain biking, I used those same bibs to ride offroad and quickly realized the reason for ride-specific clothes (read: I tore up a lot of bibs when I crashed on the trails). Since, I’ve bought and worn several mountain bike shorts without enjoying the same saddle comfort that I feel on the road. I thought this might be the reality of durable gear, but the Giro Arc Short with a base liner unifies the chamois comfort I wanted with the durability and fit I needed.

I used these shorts on a mountain bike ride where I tumbled on an off-camber corner and during a pair of relaxed commutes to a local store. The shorts worked well in both settings, not tearing despite my messy fall and being comfortable enough to ride leisurely and wear during an off-bike activity. For me, this short checked a lot of boxes and left me more excited for my next single-track ride.
