Godzilla Minus One Clip Showcases Terrifying Chase Scene

Godzilla Minus One is now out and storming the Japanese box office, but to prepare yourself for what lies ahead in US cinemas on December 1, check out this new clip from the film.

What lies ahead evidently involves a very realistic Godzilla doing everything it can to cast existential fear into peoples’ hearts. We see the enormous radioactive lizard chasing after a military gunboat, scything its weird fins through the water in close pursuit.

The boat’s inhabitants proceed to scream, before one of them jumps on an AA gun emplacement and fires at Godzilla’s giant face. The bullets seem to do nothing. Our  clip ends with a bang, presumably a missile, which will also probably do nothing.

Not much harms Godzilla. Except maybe massive gorillas.

Godzilla Minus One is set in Japan, in the wake of WW2. The ‘Minus’ of the name alludes to the plunging of Japan into a negative state, with Godzilla compounding the fallout of that devastating war.

Toho’s official description goes: "After the war, Japan's economic state has been reduced to zero. Godzilla appears and plunges the country into a negative state."

The CGI on Godzilla looks particularly impressive. At one point there’s a close-up of its head where the textures of its bumpy skin seem photorealistic. Its motivations are less defined, however. Why does it not simply blast the boat with its radioactive breath?

That’s something known only by Japanese moviegoers, and your future self when you watch the movie on December 1.
