'Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire' Gets a New Release Date

Godzilla and King Kong’s next adventure is on the horizon, and this time they’re teaming up.

Following the massive success of 2021’s Godzilla vs. Kong, the two monsters are returning to the big screen next year for Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire. The movie, from Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Pictures, promises to further explore the creatures of the MonsterVerse. The film will also represent a collaboration of sorts for the two monsters, who spent the last movie duking it out (before eventually reaching something akin to a truce).

“They’re fully fleshed out, realized characters that have all these nonverbal communication moments,” Godzilla vs. Kong director Adam Wingard told SlashFilm ahead of the premiere. “I think that’s the thing I’m most proud of.”

Wingard is slated to return for the new movie and, while many details have yet to be revealed, some casting news and plot details have emerged. In anticipation of Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, here is everything we know so far.

When will Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire be released?

Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire will crash into theaters on April 12, 2024. The film was originally slated to premiere on March 15, 2024, but was pushed back when Warner Bros. opted to concede its release date to Dune: Part Two. You'll now have to wait an extra month for the latest Godzilla film.

Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire will be released only in theaters. Future streaming information hasn’t been released yet, but previous MonsterVerse movies have streamed on Max.

What is Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire about?

Although nothing specific has been revealed, the movie pits the two creatures against “a colossal undiscovered threat hidden in our world” and further unpacks the lore of the MonsterVerse. According to the official description that accompanied the title reveal: “the epic new film will delve further into the histories of these Titans, their origins, and the mysteries of Skull Island and beyond, while uncovering the mythic battle that helped forge these extraordinary beings and tied them to humankind forever.”

Who is in the cast of Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire?

In addition to the return of Godzilla and Kong, a few actors will also reprise their roles in the MonsterVerse franchise. See below for the current main cast list, including MonsterVerse newcomers.

Dan Stevens

Dan Stevens will star in an undisclosed role. Stevens is best known for his work in Downton Abbey (2010-2015), Legion (2017-2019), The Guest (2014) and Beauty and the Beast (2017).

Rebecca Hall

Rebecca Hall will reprise her role as Dr. Ilene Andrews, a scientist who studies Kong. In addition to her work in Godzilla vs. Kong, she is known for her appearances in Vicky Cristina Barcelona (2008) and The Town (2010). She made her directorial debut with Passing (2021), which starred Tessa Thompson and Ruth Negga.

Brian Tyree Henry

Brian Tyree Henry will also reprise his Godzilla vs. Kong role as Bernie Hayes, a Titan truther. Henry is best known for his work in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (2018), Atlanta (2016-2022) and Causeway (2022). For the latter, he was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor.

Kaylee Hottle

Following her performance in Godzilla vs. Kong, Kaylee Hottle will once again play Jia, a young girl with a special connection to Kong.

Fala Chen

Fala Chen’s role hasn’t been revealed yet. She is best known for her work in The Undoing (2020), Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings (2021) and Irma Vep (2022).

Alex Ferns

Alex Ferns has been cast in an undisclosed role. He is known for his recent work in Andor (2022-present) and The Batman (2022).

Rachel House

Rachel House also joins the cast in an undisclosed role. She is known for her work in Thor: Ragnarok (2017) and as the voice of Gramma Tala in Moana (2016).
