  • Marvel Chief Kevin Feige says that Disney+ series will be essential to fully understanding new MCU films.

  • He specifically mentions WandaVision and Loki tying into the 2021 Doctor Strange sequel.

  • Disney+ is launching for the first time on November 12.

As if following the Marvel Cinematic Universe through 23 movies (and counting) isn't already a tangled web, it's about to get even more complicated. In a new in-depth story from Bloomberg, Marvel chief Kevin Feige revealed that to fully understand upcoming movies in the MCU, fans will need to also keep up with the events of several Disney+ series also on the way.

In particular, he mentioned that the events of WandaVision, which will follow Elizabeth Olsen's Scarlet Witch and Paul Bettany's Vision, will factor into 2021's Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, which will feature Scarlet Witch as a main character. He also suggested that the Loki series, starring Tom Hiddleston, will factor in. “I’m not sure we’ve actually acknowledged that before,” Feige says. “But it does.”

While this might be the first time that Feige is officially acknowledging that these series will be crossing over with their big-screen relatives, it's not exactly the most shocking development. The article also mentions rumors that the shows could be in the range of a $25 million budget per episode, which is significantly above the record-setting final season of Game of Thrones.

And then there's also the talent that Disney+ has brought out for their new platform. While Marvel series of the past (like the Netflix shows Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, etc.) have developed cult followings, none of those characters ever appeared on screen. Even ABC's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., which starred a former major film character in Clark Gregg's Phil Coulson, never re-integrated with the movies. But with the likes of Hiddleston, Olsen, Bettany along with Sebastian Stan, Anthony Mackie, and Jeremy Renner all on board for Disney+ projects, it would seem impossible to not make it a bigger deal.

The first of these series to debut will be next year's The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, which should pick up almost immediately from where Avengers: Endgame left off. Captain America is one of the MCU's two most pivotal characters, so picking up where his story left off will obviously be pivotal for the future of the wide-ranging franchise. It remains to be seen which movies that series will tie into, but surely that information will come with time.
