Good American Denim Brand Co-founder Khloé Kardashian Keeps Her Christmas Eve Outfit a Surprise From Her Sisters

Just like everything else in their lives, the Kardashian-Jenner family does Christmas in a big way. The clan kicks off its holiday festivities with an annual Christmas Eve bash thrown by matriarch Kris Jenner. The evening takes place at her Calabasas, Calif., mansion, but if you’ve happened to ever catch a glimpse at a photo from the soiree, you’ll notice that the guests arrive as if dressed for a ball. During the launch of her new jeans line, Good American, Khloé Kardashian gave Yahoo Style an inside glimpse into what the big party is like. “The real Santa comes … and he has a Rolex,” she reveals. The 32-year-old also says that dressing for the occasion is somewhat of a fun competition between her and her sisters and that everyone keeps their outfit a surprise until the big night. On Christmas morning, the family is famous for gathering around the tree to open presents while rocking matching pajamas, but their coordination isn’t exactly done for the photo ops. “We are all hungover,” jokes Kardashian. “And that’s why we’re matching, because we can’t figure it out the next day!” she adds.

Kardashian has been busy promoting her recent denim endeavor since its October launch — which made $1 million in sales on the first day it was available. The line, which she created alongside Emma Grede, was inspired by the duo’s desire to make stylish jeans for women of all shapes and sizes and to have them all featured in the same section of a department store. Not having to wander into the plus-size corner to browse for jeans is something Kardashian herself was really gunning for. “I remember my sisters and I would shop for denim, and they wouldn’t have my size,” she explains. “When you are not feeling great about yourself and someone says, ‘Oh we don’t carry your size,’ you feel like s***.” The masterminds behind Good American are thrilled to be able to break down barriers with their latest project. “We really hope that other designers take after our lead,” Kardashian proclaims.

We caught up with Kardashian and Grede to discuss the inspiration behind Good American, how Kardashian feels the sexiest in workout clothes, and why it’s important to indulge and “have the cake” over the holidays.

Yahoo Style: What inspired you to launch a jeans line for all sizes and body types?

Emma Grede: I came up with this idea to launch this brand, selfishly wanting to create something for myself. I’m pretty small and curvy, and I just thought who better to try and work with than Khloé? I’ve known the family and I’ve known Kris [Jenner] for a really long time. So I asked her if I could have a meeting with Khloé, and when we met, she had quite a lot to say about denim and finding the perfect denim. So we kind of just set about creating something that went for all sizes, for all women, and that’s really where this started.

Khloé, you’re in amazing shape these days, but you’ve said in the past that you’ve struggled with finding jeans. Tell us about your journey with trying to find the right pair.

Khloé Kardashian: Well, I buy a premium denim, and so it’s more expensive and it’s sold at more small boutiques. They would only go up to a size 8 or a 10, and I think that’s being fair, but sometimes not even a 10. I was a 12 at the time, maybe bigger, and I remember my sisters and I would shop for denim and they wouldn’t have my size. So already when you are not feeling great about yourself and someone says, “Oh we don’t carry your size,” you feel like s***. And when you are with your friends and your sisters…

Mainstream models are so stick thin, and that’s obviously such an issue for young girls who are so impressionable. Are you hoping to challenge the perception of the ideal body by having this line and promoting it with curvier models?

Kardashian: Definitely. But it’s not just about curves or no curves, because we don’t believe in body-shaming whatsoever, whether you are stick skinny or whether you are short or tall. That’s why we have such a variety and a diverse range of women — whether it’s the color of their skin, their height, whether they have tattoos or shaved heads or long flowing hair. So many people have a perception of what beauty is supposed to be. And it was for so long a certain size with long, beautiful, flowing hair with light blue eyes. I think we are really fighting that stereotype. Beauty is from within, and however you feel good about yourself, let’s promote that and really we want to back that. So we want the girl to fit into the denim and not the other way around. It shouldn’t be the other way around.

How did you select the models who made the Good Squad cut?

Grede: I’m so excited about them! It was an amazing process. Khloé actually went out on social media with just a manifesto. It was what our beliefs are, what we really want to do with this brand, and the response was so overwhelming. We had 100,000 hits in a day. 12,000 girls submitted entries. And then we saw about 250 women, which was kind of extraordinary. We were looking for more than a look; we were looking for more of a vibe to come through. The girls we’ve chosen are all amazing individuals with their own personalities, with their own things going on, and actually that’s what we wanted to do. We wanted to say these girls are individuals. They are all doing different things, and they embody certain values and certain principles that we think are really really important to hold sacred.

What is the secret to being comfortable with your body?

Kardashian: It really is just how you feel on the inside. No matter the prettiest dress you’re in, if you don’t feel good about yourself, it doesn’t matter. Sometimes I feel the sexiest I am in a pair of jeans or workout clothes, rather than some gorgeous gown. I do feel it really comes from within. I didn’t understand that when I was younger. I always thought that was bulls***, but it’s very true.

The holidays are coming up. What’s the secret to dressing for a Kardashian holiday? And, Emma, have you joined them for any yet?

Kardashian: Lord. Lord. Lord.

Grede: I have not. I’m still waiting for my invite actually!

Kardashian: Well, if you’re not back in London, then you’re coming Christmas Eve.

Grede: I’m in. I’ll be like in with the whole pajama situation.

Kardashian: No. Those are Christmas morning. Christmas Eve, my mom is known for the biggest — well for us it’s our biggest family holiday party. It’s Christmas Eve. She plans it every year. The real Santa comes. He’s been coming since I’ve been a baby, so I don’t know how they got this guy and he has a Rolex. So I think that real Santas have Rolexes. For that, we get really dressed up. Even though it’s at my mom’s house, we get really glam. I think we look forward to it every year.

Grede: I love Christmas. I’m the most festive person in the world!

Kardashian: If you’re not overseas, you gotta come because your kids will love everything.

Grede: You do it very well over here actually, like Christmas in general.

Kardashian: Kris Jenner does it really well.

Grede: She’s good at celebrations.

Kardashian: So that party, just go big or go home. You can’t be overdressed at this shindig. And then the next day, we are all hungover in matching pajamas. And that’s why we’re matching, because we can’t figure it out the next day.

How much planning goes into your Christmas Eve look? Are you and your sisters trying to one-up one another or are you coordinating your outfits?

Kardashian: No. You know we never tell each other. I think we’re competitive in that way. No one ever tells the other one what we are wearing. My mom, everyone. We don’t tell anyone.

Grede: Really? Even with your mom?

Kardashian: No. She’s the hostess, and we’re like, “Uh-uh. You will not get us, Kris.” But everyone comes, and they dress to impress Christmas Eve. I will say.

Is there a family contest for who dressed the best?

Kardashian: I think it’s all just mental. And then we all see each other’s Instagram posts. If you pull up the Instagram, you’re like, “OK. They all look good. Is this at their house? They all look good.” It looks like we’re at a real event. But we get so excited. It’s like a fun competition.

Grede: I think Kris needs to adopt what the queen does in England. Do you know you have to show her your outfit? This is what you have to do. Before you sit down with the queen, you get your outfits out on the bed and the lady in waiting will come out and choose what you are allowed to wear.

Kardashian: No!

Grede: Maybe I should tell your mom that and then she can totally one-up you.

Kardashian: No! I’ll kill you! I’ll kill you if you do that!

Khloé, with exercise and diet being such a part of your lifestyle now, how do you enjoy the holidays without overdoing it?

Kardashian: See, I’m everything in moderation. I don’t believe in depriving yourself, especially as the holidays come once a year. I think, OK, don’t eat a full cake, but if you are like, “God. My grandmother makes the best cake,” have a piece. It’s like have the cake. We live once. I would rather eat what I want and work out harder the next day. That’s my thing because I love food. I love a good glass of champagne. So, I’m going to say, hey, run a little longer. Because that’s just my mentality. So you gotta see what’s important to you in life. Have the cake.
