'Good Omens' Is Getting the TV Adaptation It Deserves
Amazon Prime's new show Good Omens is based on a bestselling fantasy novel of the same name.
The series has lined up top talent-including David Tennant, Michael Sheen, Frances McDormand, and Benedict Cumberbatch-to star in its Armageddon-themed romp.
It's been nearly 29 years since Good Omens first hit bookshelves. The result of a collaboration between Neil Gaiman, of American Gods and Sandman fame, and Terry Pratchett, best known for the Discworld series, Good Omens is a prime example of the mantra "two heads are better than one."
Now, Amazon Prime has adapted the novel into a six episode series. Here's what to know about Good Omens before it drops at the end of May.
It seems like the show will be a faithful adaptation of the book.
Neil Gaiman has written the screenplays for all six episodes, and is serving as an executive producer, so it's a safe bet that the show will come out something like its source material. (Sadly, Pratchett died in 2015).
One thing has changed since the book came out, though. The plot is centered around a demon (David Tennant) and an angel (Michael Sheen) who form an unlikely alliance to avert the apocalypse-an event that seems much more likely to happen in 2019 than it did in 1990. "There was a line that Terry and I put into the book when we wrote it," Gaiman told Engadget, "about how unlikely an apocalypse was at that time when everybody was getting along so incredibly well. I, frankly, given the choice, would much rather have had to put that line into the show."
The trailer promises action, delivered with a sly dose of humor.
The preview introduces Tennant and Sheen's characters, and shows how they come together despite their differences. ("I don't even like you!" Sheen yells.) Watch it in full below.
The cast is stacked.
In addition to Tennant and Sheen, Good Omens features Benedict Cumberbatch as Satan, Frances McDormand as God, Jon Hamm as the Archangel Gabriel, Brian Cox as Death, and more.
The show starts streaming on May 31.
Buckle up for the end of the world: Good Omens drops on Amazon Prime at the end of May.
