Grab the Tissues & Check the Crock-Pot: Today Is the 20th Anniversary of Jack Pearson's ‘This Is Us’ Death

If you’re still recovering from Tuesday night’s episode of This Is Us, then prepare to ugly-cry some more.

Today marks the 20th anniversary of Jack’s (Milo Ventimiglia) death in the dreaded house fire on This Is Us. How do we know, you may ask? Well, episode 13 of the hit NBC series featured the Pearson family celebrating the Super Bowl on the night of the blaze.

So, if we combine Rebecca’s (Mandy Moore) Denver Broncos reference with the Green Bay Packers logo that flashed across the TV screen toward the end of the episode, then we’re looking at Super Bowl XXXII, which took place on January 25, 1998. Exactly 20 years ago today. Just let that sink in.

While next week’s episode of This Is Us promises to answer all our questions about Jack’s death, Ventimiglia certainly isn’t making things easier. “It’s just an absolute soul-crushing event,” he told Entertainment Weekly. “Once you figure out the moment where it’s going to happen, you may get some hope and then it’s all going to go away. I think the best thing I can say—or the worst thing I can say—is it’s going to be f***ing painful.”

Thank you, Mr. Ventimiglia. May we have another?

This Is Us returns to wreck us on Sunday, February 4, on NBC.
