Veteran news personality Greta Van Susteren responded to online commenters criticizing a photograph of the former Fox News, CNN, and MSNBC anchor sandwiched between former President George H.W. Bush and former President Bill Clinton that was taken more than 10 years ago. In a Facebook post shared on Sunday morning, Van Susteren addressed trolls who demanded her photo to be taken down, referencing allegations that “President Bush groped women and President Clinton sexually assaulted them.”

She wrote, “I have had this picture on my FB for one reason – and one I think important to our divided nation – to point out visually that Democrats, Republicans AND the media are capable of working together to make things better for Americans IF THEY TRY. It is not always and should not always be some giant political food fight with Democrats and Republicans and then the media adding fuel to the fire. WE CAN WORK TOGETHER TO DO GOOD THINGS IF WE TRY – and I am not going to give up trying.”

I don’t get this…really? There are a few on twitter complaining (and retweeting their complaints) about my Facebook…

The photograph in question was taken when Bush, Clinton, and Van Susteren joined forces to bring relief to Texas after Hurricane Katrina devastated entire communities. Twitter commenters questioned Van Susteren’s “integrity and decency” because she posed with Bush and Clinton.

Van Susteren wrote in her post she was proud to work alongside Bush and Clinton to help those in need after the hurricane. “I was lucky that I had the big spotlight of the media platform to show what can be done when we work together,” she wrote.

Other Twitter commenters supported the meaning behind the photo.

It’s traditional for presidents from different political parties to set aside their differences and join forces when disaster strikes the nation. Most recently, former presidents Barack Obama, George W. Bush, Bill Clinton, George H.W. Bush, and Jimmy Carter raised $41 million for hurricane relief to benefit those affected in Texas, Florida, and the Caribbean by Hurricane Irma and Hurricane Maria. They even received praise from President Trump.

However, it seems helping those in need does not mean Van Susteren should be in their presence, according to the Twitter trolls. But this does not mean the journalist will let their comments affect or change her views.

“I will continue to work towards getting people to help each other and using whatever I have – including this picture – to represent the good,” she wrote.
