Grey’s Anatomy’s Jerrika Hinton Shopped Her Closet For the People’s Choice Awards

After a long wait, Grey’s Anatomy is finally coming back after its winter hiatus on February 11. The cast of the Shonda Rhimes-created show, which is now in its 12th season, scored a People’s Choice Award last evening for Favorite Network TV Drama. We caught up with cast member Jerrika Hinton, who plays Dr. Stephanie Edwards on the show, on the red carpet. The actress gave us the scoop on the upcoming midseason premiere (directed by Denzel Washington!) and shared her thoughts on how the presidential candidates should dress during the election process.
Yahoo Style: So, are you allowed to reveal anything that’s upcoming for Grey’s Anatomy as the show returns next month?
Jerrika Hinton: I can tell you some stuff. When we read the upcoming episode at the table read a lot of us walked away like, “Whoa, are you doing this in the middle of the season because this feels like some finale stuff!”
Uh-oh.
Yeah. So there’s that. Don’t be scared. It’s terrible, but it’s awesome because of that very fact. If we’re doing that in the middle of the season then you know it’s good. The fun thing about this year is that they get to break open a whole bunch of boxes that they kept themselves constricted in and tell a whole bunch of new stories from a lot of different angles and deal with some recurring themes in new ways. So the fact that something of this nature is happening in the middle of the season can’t help but make you feel “Okay, well, then where are we going to be by episode 24?” And also, don’t forget that this is the episode that Denzel Washington directed. Never forget about that!
Had you ever met him before?
Once, for like three seconds.
Did you freak out when he came onto set?
A lot of our cast did. A lot of our crew did. But surprisingly I did not. But I will say there were little private moments that made me freak out because of professional exchanges we had that made me go, “Someone of your stature is saying this? Oh my God.”
Why did he want to be involved with Grey’s Anatomy?
I think that is purely the magic of Debbie Allen being our new supervising producer. Debbie always has her hands in a lot of pots and right now she’s on the board of the Annenberg Center and they just honored Denzel with an award. So I think it was a part of that process. And she has friends in high, high places. She constantly whispering in people’s ears and it’s all for our benefit. And Denzel directed during Jim Pickens’ birthday – who plays Dr. Webber – and so he got to have Denzel sing him “Happy Birthday.” It was crazy. I was like, “Can I get your email, sir?”
Speaking of powerful people, politics have been on everyone’s mind lately. Is there something you hope to see in Hillary Clinton’s style as she pursues her campaign?
My deepest hope is that she doesn’t even have to worry about what she’s embodying as she’s going into it. I guarantee you Donald Trump is not thinking about that. I guarantee you Bernie Sanders is not thinking about that. Ben Carson is not. No one is thinking about it, unless they’re trying to figure out what color tie to where. I feel like that’s the extent of their choices. As a woman that’s my deepest hope for Hillary.
Ties are a pretty big concern though.
I know, come on! You can wear the same suit five times in a row and no one notices, but if you change the color of your tie it’s all of sudden noticeable.
You’re wearing pieces from your own closet tonight. Is there something you’re personally trying to exude on the red carpet these days?
The most powerful sense of self. I want to walk onto a carpet and feel like I am a witch. I am a powerful witch. And it usually works.
