The Grubers—Cycling's Top Photography Duo—Wants You to Join Them for a Ride
As professional photographers exploring the world by bike, Jered and Ashley Gruber have ridden seemingly everywhere together—from the fjords of Iceland, to the cobbles of Northern France and beyond. But now, they’re ready to explore the closest thing that two itinerant cyclists can call home: the eastern US, and more specifically, the country roads leading into their hometown of Athens, Georgia.
Starting October 22, the couple will ride 1,100 miles from Emmaus, Pennsylvania—where Bicycling magazine is headquartered—to Athens, which they plan to reach by November 2. It’s a mission of discovery and documentation for the two explorers, who are also inviting others to join in for part of the adventure.
Think you have what it takes to grab the Grubers’ wheels? The group—which will also include a former USA Crits overall champ, a top-10 USA Crits overall rider, and an increasing number of other strong riders as they head south—will be tackling about 100 miles a day. Jered says they’re planning to have fun, but not necessarily meander.
“The overall pace won't be tough, but not slow, either,” he says. “We want to roll moderately, so I would expect average speeds in the 15-18mph range depending on how mountainous it gets.”
They’ll also be traveling with a van, staying in hotels overnight, and stopping for the Bookwalter Binge Gran Fondo in Asheville on Halloween. After making their ride map public, they’ve already made a few tweaks to the route based on local suggestions. Check out the route here, and consider joining them for a stretch as they pass through your area.
Not sure if this is the ride for you? Here are the Grubers' super-ambitious goals for what they’re already calling “Riding Home: Chasing Fall from Pennsylvania to Georgia.”
1. Raise hell
2. Laugh lots
3. Ride tons of amazing roads
4. Eat lots and tons
5. Take pictures of all of the above
6. Make it from Emmaus to Athens in one piece
