Alongside many other celebrities who knew Matthew Perry well, Gwyneth Paltrow shared a kind message about the late actor, including a few personal memories of the summer they first met.
The actress posted a photo of Perry on her Instagram on Sunday, Oct. 29, starting out by saying, "I met Matthew Perry in 1993 at the Williamstown Theater Festival in Massachusetts. We were both there for most of the summer doing plays."
"He was so funny and so sweet and so much fun to be with. We drove out to swim in creeks, had beers in the local college bar, kissed in a field of long grass. It was a magical summer," she recalled. "He had shot the pilot of Friends but it had not aired yet. He was nervous, hoping his big break was just around the corner. It was."
Paltrow went on to reveal her relationship with Perry when he got the role of Chandler Bing in Friends and how it changed after, writing, "We stayed friends for a while until we drifted apart, but I was always happy to see him when I did. I am super sad today, as so many of us are. I hope Matthew is at peace at long last. I really do."
Many found Paltrow's message touching and emotional, as one fan said, "What a sweet story of two young beautiful people. We never know what life has in store for us, sometimes life is a hard place. ??."
"A sweet kiss and a magical story. Some people are just like that…a little touch of magic," said another.
A third eloquently replied, "So so sad when the people who have made us laugh and brought us relief from our own struggles through their work have been struggling so hard… sending love your way. The loss of a friend is so painful."
In 1993, both Paltrow and Perry starred in the thriller film Deadly Relations, though they never shared the screen again throughout their careers.
