Gymnast Jade Carey Shares Update After Fall During Olympic Floor Exercise

Team USA gymnasts have been Olympic-ready for years, preparing their routines and perfecting every movement. Olympic gymnastics star Jade Carey, who won the gold medal for her floor routine at the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo, knows this all too well.

But after a fall during her floor exercise at the July 28 qualification round, Carey won’t be able to defend her gold medal at the 2024 Games. The gymnast placed 74th in the round with a score of 10.633.

What Jade Carey and her family said about her 2024 Olympic floor incident

Carey has since shared an update on the reason behind her fall with Olympics.com, stating she hasn’t been feeling up to par. “I just have not been feeling well the past few days and haven't been able to eat or anything,” she shared. “I had, like, no energy today.”

While many were convinced it was nerves affecting Carey’s game, she confirmed that wasn’t exactly the case. The gymnast explained, “I had, like, no energy today and didn't really have a sense of what was going on in my head. So, I just kind of wanted people to know that so, they know that there's actually something wrong.”

Her mother, Danielle Greenberg, explained to TODAY, “She’s doing much better today. Trying to hydrate, get some food in, ready to go.” Her coach and father, Brian Carey,  was also under the weather last week and missed recent women’s podium training, which was shared via X by USA Gymnastics.

The gold medalist has taken to social media to share her thoughts and gratitude for everyone that has supported her. “All heart ?? not the day I was expecting to have but I can’t thank you all enough for the love and support,” she wrote in an Instagram post. “I am so proud of this team and what we accomplished today. we’re not done yet ??”

Carey shared a similar post on X, formerly known as Twitter, writing, “I haven’t been feeling the best the past few days but I gave it everything I had today. thank you for all the support I have received. I’m so grateful ????.”

Past Olympians came to Jade Carey’s defense online

Many young athletes, especially Olympians, know exactly what it’s like to be watched and judged by millions of spectators. A few former Olympians have come to the defense of Carey amidst her fall, knowing well what it is like when that happens on live television.

The two-time Olympian and three-time gold medalist, Aly Raisman, has shared her love and support for Carey. “You did so well today & I’m so proud of you!!!” Raisman wrote on X. “It breaks my heart that our society is so hard on athletes that you feel the need to explain yourself ??.”

Raisman went on to explain that Carey is only human and that mistakes happen, which is allowed, even of an Olympian. She ended her message with, “You inspire so many & remember there are people at home dreaming of one day being just like you ??.”

Raisman not only wrote a message on X, but she also shared how hard it is for athletes to prepare for competition day when there is always the possibility of feeling unwell. “One of the hardest things about sports is that no matter how much you prepare you, sometimes the morning that you wake up for a meet, you might not be feeling well,” Raisman shared to Olympics.com.

“Gymnastics is already hard enough when you're feeling your peak, at your best,” she continued. “So the fact that she said she hasn't eaten in a few days and has been sick and was able to perform at that level, is truly remarkable.”

Carey’s Olympic team includes Simon Biles, Jordan Chiles, Suni Lee and Hezly Rivera. The athletes will continue to work together in the team final, as well as in individual events.
