Gymnast McKayla Maroney Gives Candid Update on 'Wacko' Health Issues
McKayla Maroney is opening up about a slew of recent health conditions that have been plaguing her life lately.
In a new social media post from Tuesday, Oct. 3, the Olympic gold medalist touched base with her followers on the social media account for her brand, Glowy, which is described as a space Maroney created "for all things wellness, beauty, and mental health."
In her first update in several months, Maroney wrote, "Hey girl?? It’s been forever. Hopefully you had a hot girl summer because I definitely did not."
Instead, the 27-year-old said she's been dealing with "severe insomnia," and within a span of three months, she only slept for a total of 10 days.
"I’d like to say it was a nightmare, but you have to sleep to have nightmares," she quipped in her caption.
"I went to tons of doctors, and I’ve only just begun to get to the root cause of this health spiral crisis lol," she explained, before revealing that she "finally" found out she has a "histamine intolerance," which was causing a "massive adrenaline problem."
"When it got really bad, high histamine foods made me feel internally itchy, like I was getting bit by mosquitoes all night," she noted, adding that she only recently realized histamine was the issue and cut those foods out. She also started taking a supplement to help her body breakdown histamine.
"I’ve started to sleep again. PRAISE GOD," she exclaimed, adding, "Someone give me a round of applause, because I barely survived this one."
Maroney's post included a variety of random pictures, including one photo seemingly taken from a medical facility, while the gymnast had an IV in her arm. Another snap featured her holding up a food sensitivities test, which she had filled out with her own blood samples.
"I still need to figure out what’s causing the histamine intolerance but this is a good start for me," she optimistically added, while noting, "I still have pretty bad anemia, (low iron) I’m trying to get better from—and I found out high oxalate foods (like spinach, almonds, potatoes) give me massive fatigue, and weird neuropathy issues at night, that was also ruining my sleep. ??????."
Maroney admitted to feeling "kind of embarrassed" about her "wacko" health issues, telling her followers, "I hate how high maintenance they’ve made me when I just want to be normal."
"But it is what it is," she added, noting that she's going to keep sharing her story in the hopes of helping someone else.
While concluding her post, which she called a "trauma dump," Maroney vowed, "My next posts will be more helpful I promise."
