All Hail Celeste: Nicole Kidman Is the Reason Meryl Streep Joined ‘Big Little Lies’

Sorry, Reese Witherspoon, but Nicole Kidman just became our favorite lady of Monterey Bay.

In a recent interview, Big Little Lies author Liane Moriarty revealed that Nicole Kidman helped her recruit Meryl Streep for the second season of the hit HBO show. Funny enough, Moriarty always pictured Streep playing the role of Perry’s mom, Mary Louise, but she initially received backlash from the BLL crew.

She said, “I was about half way through [writing] and I was talking to the producers and I said, ‘I’ve got this role of Perry’s mother,’ and not quite believing my own audacity, ‘I’d like Meryl to play this character.’ And the producers were laughing at me because they were saying, ‘You’ve become so Hollywood,’ as in, picking up the phone and saying, ‘Get me Meryl.”

That all changed when Kidman, who is a member of Streep’s inner circle (NBD), caught wind of the idea and pulled a total Olivia Pope move. Moriarty continued, “Nicole sent me an email saying, ‘Ask and you shall receive.’”

Bless you, Celeste. Big Little Lies season two premieres in 2019.
