Hailey Baldwin Says Being Compared to Selena Gomez & Other Exes Makes Her Feel Like "Less of a Woman"
Hailey Baldwin and Justin Bieber have been married since 2018, and Bieber has made it clear, via more than one of his songs, that Baldwin is the love of his life. But when the couple answered fan questions on their Facebook Watch show, The Biebers on Watch, Baldwin shared some of her personal feelings about being compared to her husband's ex girlfriends, who are also public figures. She didn't mention anyone in particular.
The question was how the Biebers "manage to be a couple when everyone feels like they have a say in their relationship."
"Ooh, that's good for you," Bieber said to Baldwin after he read the question at about 46 minutes into the video. In response, Hailey revealed:
"Let me start by saying there's probably a lot I could say about that particular question, about that subject. It's definitely not easy. Justin knows that I've had a really, really hard go, and a really hard time with a lot of the things people say and a lot of the ways that I feel like people have made comparisons and just put me in a position where they've made me really feel like less of a woman. It's not easy, I think especially when people have fans that are really passionate and they want to express that and they want to express their opinion... I also think when people have a lot to say about something, they go out of their way to make somebody feel less than or go out of their way to make somebody feel bad, it's because they're going through something themselves, and they're projecting onto this public figure, and it makes them feel better about themselves. That reality doesn't make it any easier, but I think it helps to remind myself, 'That person is only making me feel that way because they're going through something themselves.' I've addressed it a lot, I've addressed how... I think I've gotten to a point where people are gonna say what they're gonna say... people think they know what happened in his life and his relationships and they think they know what happened between us and our relationship and how we got here and there's no possible way they could. They invent details that they think are true that really aren't, and I got to a point where I'm like, 'Why am I even gonna try to go out of my way to set the record straight where it's really nobody's business and it doesn't matter?... There's so much that people don't know that went behind the scenes."
Last April, Baldwin posted a photo of her and Bieber that was simply captioned, "my only bubba." In the comments, fans reportedly started saying hurtful things such as, "in everything imitates Selena even in her photo, Selena and Justin did the same, I can not believe how far this woman is down, maybe she wants to look like Sel to see if Justin like that comes to love her really."
Someone else said, "He will leave you one day and he will go to selenaaaaaaaaaa."
Baldwin responded to some of the comments then, saying, "We're adults that have better things to do than waste time explaining something just so you can stop your delusional fantasies. I'm not going to sit here and let obsessive strangers try to tell me about my own husband, you wanna talk about somebodies [sic] husband then get ur own. G'night!!"
On the Facebook video, Baldwin also addressed how she lives her life as a public figure when she's not in social isolation because of a pandemic. She said that, growing up, she felt that she was able to have a "pretty normal life" in upstate New York, outside of the fact that she is a member of the famous "Baldwin" acting family. But things definitely changed when she started working and hanging out with her fellow famous young people. Then it went to a new level when she became a Bieber. She explained,
"I always felt like amongst all this stuff, I still was able to maintain my privacy and be normal, and then when we got married, it was like, all of that kind of went out the window. I had never lived in L.A. before, and then we were living in L.A. a lot of the time... To me there there has to be a balance. I don't think it's healthy to try to be extremely isolated because you don't want to go outside and you don' t want to leave your house because you know people are gonna follow you with cameras. But at the same time, you have to understand that that's been a struggle for me."
