These days, when we see Halle Bailey, it’s hard not to think of her transformative performance in 2023’s live-action version of The Little Mermaid—but let’s not forget she was an R&B-singing protégé of Beyoncé years before she was swimming with sea creatures in Disney blockbusters.
Through it all, Bailey has always been one to watch on red carpets, and she certainly didn’t disappoint at Sunday night’s 66th Grammy Awards. She made a gorgeous arrival at Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, in a naked dress whose glittering rhinestone embellishments and crystal fringe hemline might be familiar to fans of the iconic dress worn by Ariel in one of the final scenes from the original 1989 animated Little Mermaid. Bailey finished off the look with a dainty diamond necklace.
This year, the high-note belter is nominated in the Best R&B Song category for “Angel.” The track is intended to be the first single from Bailey’s forthcoming debut album. Of making of the song, Bailey told Teen Vogue: “I wanted to be able to embrace and be proud of myself and who I am naturally, through and through. I hope other brown and Black girls and everyone in general feel embraced, respected, and inspired hearing the words of this song.”
Bailey previously earned five Grammy nominations for her work with her sister, Chloe. As the duo Chloe x Halle, they released received a nod for their 2020 studio album Ungodly Hour, for Best Progressive R&B Album. They have also been nominated for their songs “Do It,” “Wonder What She Thinks of Me,” and “The Kids Are Alright,” as well as for Best New Artist.
