Halle Berry's historic Oscar glow was all about highlighting her brown eyes
In 2002, Halle Berry made history as the first (and as yet only) black woman to win an Academy Award for Best Actress. Dressed in an Ellie Saab gown with a see-through bodice and sporting her signature pixie haircut, Berry embraced her sex appeal while still exuding class. And once she took the stage to accept the highly coveted golden statue, albeit teary-eyed, we got an even better glimpse of her red-carpet makeup.
Check out the video above to see how makeup artist Tedrick LaMar of the Butterfly Studio Salon put a fresh spin on Berry’s historic Oscars glow, as well as his highlighting trick to make brown eyes sparkle.
Step-by-step instructions:
1. Dab Urban Decay Primer Potion onto lids for a long-lasting look.
2. Blend Nooner (a mute mauve) from the Urban Decay Naked 3 Eyeshadow Palette onto eyelids, focusing on outer corners with a small, fluffy brush.
3. Apply Darkside (a cool coffee) from the same palette to lids and along lower lash line.
4. Press a Champagne highlighter onto center of lids. Try: e.l.f. Baked Eyeshadow Palette in NYC
5. Coat top and bottom lashes with black mascara.
6. Warm up complexion with bronzer, brushing on cheekbones and along hairline and jawline. Tedrick’s tool: NARS Contour Blush in Paloma
7. For a subtle flush, sweep L’Oréal Paris Infallible Paints Blush in 230 onto apples of cheeks.
8. Trace and fill in lips with a fool-proof lip crayon like NARS Velvet Matte Lip Pencil in Bettina.
9. Outline mouth with MAC Lip Pencil in Stripdown to add richness. Then finish by applying NARS Lip Gloss in Striptease to center of lips.
Hairstyling details: Stylist Jeelan Aleem for Glamsquad prepped hair with Kérastase Laque Couture, which also adds a nice sheen. She then used a flat iron and Kérastase Baume Double JE to recreate Berry’s piecey pixie texture.
