Most low-cal desserts taste like punishment. You tell yourself it's okay, really - you want overly saccharine ice shards that vaguely remind you of the shadow of the snack you truly crave. So when Halo Top announced its latest seasonal flavor was blueberry crumble, we warily approached the pint.

We'd been pleasantly surprised by the brand's other flavors in the past - you don't get to become the bestselling pint in America through Instagram fame alone, after all - but still. Could it have the tangy, fruitiness of blueberries and crumbly crunch of from the streusel topping of the classic dessert?

Yes and, surprisingly, yes. The ice cream needs at least 20 minutes to thaw, but when it does, it's creamy and tangy, like blueberry Greek yogurt. The swirls of blueberry mimic the bursts of blueberry juice you'd get from pie filling, and the graham cracker crust pieces add a chewiness and a little sweetness, adding a necessary second layer of flavor.

The whole pint clocks in at roughly the same calories as a slice of blueberry pie, according to USDA data, but packs five times as much protein (20 grams in Halo Top vs. 4 grams per slice of pie, in case you're curious).

Real talk, though: Will it totally replace a craving for blueberry crumble, if your mom's recipe is what you want, what you really, really want? No. Because ice cream isn't pie. The warmth, the texture - it won't cut it. But, if you love those flavors and want to try it in a whole new way (ideally, in a sundae or atop an actual slice of pie), you'll go crazy for this.

Halo Top says the company developed the flavor after receiving requests from fans, but it's only a temporary addition to grocery stores' freezers. You'll be able to pick up a pint in supermarkets nationwide from March to May.
