This Is What Happened When Alicia Silverstone Tried to Wear Her ‘Clueless’ Costumes IRL

She now stars as a housewife seeking revenge against a cheating husband on TV’s American Woman, but Alicia Silverstone is perhaps best known for her role as Cher Horowitz in 1995’s teen classic Clueless. Cher’s iconic wardrobe continues to inspire fashion trends more than two decades later, and while Silverstone herself took home many of the looks that would go on to be famous, she explains why she could never re-wear them, and we’re like, totally buggin‘.

The Book Club star recently appeared on Late Night with Seth Meyers and told the host that she’s currently loving her American Woman character’s bold ’70s fashion, even donning a dress that famous ’60s model Twiggy previously wore. But just as her character’s vibrant throwback style doesn’t translate well to real-life dressing, Silverstone reveals that a plaid mini and high knee socks might not, either.

She shares, “I took so many costumes home, but the knee-highs with the Mary Janes in a normal world doesn’t really quite work.” Meyers then pointed out that if people saw her on the street wearing her Clueless costumes, they’d think it was “very strange,” to which the 41-year-old actress agreed.

And while Silverstone did bring back her famous plaid yellow outfit for an episode of Lip Sync Battle in the spring, it seems that getting rid of Cher’s clothes remains her biggest Clueless regret.

In 2017, she told Entertainment Tonight that she gave every outfit she took home away, “I took so much of the clothes,” admitting, “I’m really sad because I don’t have any of them anymore because, like a ding dong, I got home with so many of the clothes and I was like, ‘How am I going to wear these Mary Janes out now?'”

At the time, she said she was a “tomboy” that simply “didn’t get fashion” and clearly had no idea how legendary her character — and those uber recognizable Clueless outfits — would become. As if!
