What’s Happening With That Lando Series on Disney+?

We’ve just got our first update in three years about Disney+’s upcoming Lando series, and it’s bad news. Development on a streaming show starring smooth-talking Star Wars smuggler Lando Calrissian looks to be halted, according to its lead writer Justin Simien.

"I certainly poured my heart and spent a lot of time working with them to put together a really great show,” Simien said in an interview with The Direct. “It feels like everybody loves it. And, you know, I was told we had to put a pause on it because of scheduling, and the next update I got [was in 2020], some years ago. So I don't know, I have no idea what's going on with it."

The last time we heard about Lando was in December 2020, when Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy announced it during a Disney's Investor Day presentation. It would stream on Disney+ and star actor/music artist Donald Glover. He might be disappointed, but not as much as Marvel's Hayley Atwell on the “Frustrating” Doctor Strange 2 shoot.

Glover's charismatic portrayal of Lando was one of the highlights of 2018’s Solo: A Star Wars Story, which otherwise underperformed at the box office. Considered by most metrics a bomb, it’s the least-grossing Star Wars theatrical release. And there were a few reasons for that.

Troubled production saw Ron Howard replace the previous director halfway through production, extensive reshoots sent costs skyrocketing (it’s the most expensive Star Wars film ever, costing $300 million), and it released just months after Star Wars: The Last Jedi, which was a bit too much Star Wars for most.

The film being a flop led Lucasfilm to pivot towards streaming, in turn leading towards the Lando series. But with no developments on the horizon and even the writer seemingly puzzled on what’s happening with the project, it doesn’t seem like Lando is Disney+’s biggest priority right now.
