Happy 248th birthday America!

EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) –  El Pasoans know how to do many things well, but we’re especially good at celebrating. On the 4th of July, we show our patriotism in red, white, and blue.

By 8:00 a.m. on the 4th of July, hundreds of families carrying folding chairs, tents, banners, flags, and water started lining the streets for the West El Paso Rotary Club’s annual July 4th Parade. They wore red, white, and blue T-shirts and hats and proudly waved Old Glory.

This Independence Day parade will be especially memorable for me given that I was chosen as the Grand Marshal and had the honor of leading the Parade after the color guard, of course! It’s also memorable and essential given the political climate and the Presidential election on November 6th. I have participated in parades before, but never as a Grand Marshal, so it was quite a treat.

It was a cool 90 degrees when I climbed over the red leather seats of the white convertible Corvette, lathered on more sunscreen, and began waving at people on both sides of the street. We bought 20 pounds of candies—no chocolates because they would melt in the heat—and had them ready to give to the kids.

All had fun, and it was a way to connect with our community and celebrate all the blessings of living in this country. As a first-generation El Pasoan, I feel fortunate to have been given an education and opportunity to live the American Dream through hard work and dedication. God bless America!
