A grand jury has formally charged Harvey Weinstein on counts of rape in the first and third degrees and criminal sexual acts in the first degree.

Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus Vance released a statement following the jury's decision. "This indictment brings the defendant another step closer to accountability for the crimes of violence with which he is now charged," he says. "The defendant's recent assault on the integrity of the survivors and the legal process is predictable. We are confident that when the jury hears the evidence, it will reject these attacks out of hand."

"I thank the heroic survivors for their strength throughout this process," he continued. "This investigations remains active and ongonig."

Last Friday, the disgraced movie mogul was arrested and surrendered himself to authorities in New York City following multiple investigations into claims of sexual misconduct carried out by the Manhattan District Attorney's office and the NYPD. He paid $1 million to post bail and has agreed not to travel outside of New York State and Connecticut and to wear a GPS-monitoring device.

Despite more than 20 allegations of assault by women in London, Los Angeles and New York, no other criminal charges yet been filed at this time. There are, however, ongoing civil lawsuits for sexual harassment, including a pending case brought forth by actress Ashley Judd.

This is the first step in what will probably be long trial, but hopefully some justice will be served soon.
