Harvey Weinstein Turns Himself In to Police
After a slew of allegations and news stories accusing him of sexual misconduct, Harvey Weinstein surrendered himself to the New York Police Department on Friday morning and was arrested shortly after arriving at the precinct. On Thursday, reports suggested that the NYPD had gathered enough evidence to arrest him and speculated that he would turn himself in on Friday. According to a statement from the NYPD, Weinstein was charged with rape, criminal sex act, sex abuse, and sexual misconduct for incidents involving two different women. "The NYPD thanks these brave survivors for their courage to come forward and seek justice," the statement read.
CNN reports that his bail is expected to be set at $2 million; he will be arraigned later on Friday. Weinstein is also facing investigations in London and Los Angeles, though charges have not yet been filed in either of those cities. He has continued to deny allegations of "nonconsensual sex" via his legal team, but he did issue an apology for his behavior in October. "I came of age in the '60s and '70s, when all the rules about behavior and workplaces were different," he said, after The New York Times published their initial report. "That was the culture then."
Several days later, The New Yorker published another story about Weinstein's behavior, and the onslaught of allegations against him continued throughout the fall. He has been accused of misconduct by a long list of women, including Angelina Jolie, Cara Delevingne, Gwyneth Paltrow, Lupita Nyong'o, Ashley Judd, and Rose McGowan.
