According to the shelter, the Fourth of July is the most frequent time of year when pets go missing or become lost.
“Special precautions are needed at this time, as many pets get frightened by the sounds of fireworks,” the shelter said in a news release.
Below are some tips the shelter recommends for pet owners.
Ensure collars fit on animals and that all tags are up to date.
Microchip your pet.
Consult your local veterinarian to inquire about the level of anxiety your pet has for possible anxiety medication.
Keep your pet indoors in a comfortable area.
Do not bring your pet to parties. Party food may be toxic and the chances of your pet running off or becoming lost greatly increase.
Take identifying photos of your pet in the event they become lost.
Keep vaccines up to date, including the rabies vaccine.
