HBO Just Dropped the First Trailer for ‘The Sopranos’ Prequel, ‘The Many Saints of Newark’
We’re heading back to New Jersey to pay a special visit to a young Tony Soprano.
On Tuesday, HBO finally released the first trailer for the highly anticipated Sopranos prequel, The Many Saints of Newark. And by the looks of the footage, it seems like we’re getting an in-depth glimpse into the Italian patriarch's younger years.
The trailer, which is the first new Sopranos content in almost 15 years, begins with James Gandolfini’s narration laid over his younger self getting into a fight. “When I was a kid, guys like me were brought up to follow codes,” he says in the voiceover. The 2-minute video also showcases Tony’s close relationship with Dickie Moltisanti, the father of Michael Imperioli’s Christopher Moltisanti.

HBO’s official synopsis reads: “Young Anthony Soprano is growing up in one of the most tumultuous eras in Newark’s history, becoming a man just as rival gangsters begin to rise up and challenge the all-powerful DiMeo crime family’s hold over the increasingly race-torn city. Caught up in the changing times is the uncle he idolizes, Dickie Moltisanti, who struggles to manage both his professional and personal responsibilities—and whose influence over his impressionable nephew will help make the teenager into the all-powerful mob boss we’ll later come to know: Tony Soprano.”
We first learned about the prequel back in 2018, when it was revealed that Gandolfini’s (who passed away in 2013) real-life son Michael would be tackling the role.
While speaking with Esquire, Michael revealed that stepping into his father's role was a challenge for him. He revealed, "The hardest part of this whole process was watching the show for the first time. It was an intense process. Because, as an actor, I had to watch this guy who created the role, to look for mannerisms, voice, all those things I would have to echo. But then I’d also be seeing my father."
The Many Saints of Newark is coming to HBO on September 24. We’ll be there.
