Working from home has its good points and its bad points. Among the potentially bad points is proximity to the fridge and pantry, which can be rough on your snacking habits—especially during that afternoon energy dip.
The solution? A dedicated stash of healthy work-from-home goodies rich in nutrients and flavor to keep you going—without going overboard.
Planning—and shopping for—nutritious snacks, in addition to meals (while also managing the emotional work of dealing with this pandemic), is a lot. With the help of our experts, we put together a list of good-for-you work-from-home treats that you can grab from a retailer like Walmart STAT.
Just in time to feed your growling tummy, Walmart launched a genius Pickup & Delivery service that's so convenient, you might never step foot in a store again. And right now there's a deal: Get $10 off your first order with code WOWFRESH ($50 order minimum). You can score everything from chips to dips, plus other things on your list (batteries, socks, pet food, paper towels, you name it).
“Ideally, you’d eat something that provides a combination of fiber, protein and/or fat,” registered dietitian Jessica Cording, author of The Little Book of Game-Changers, tells Yahoo Life. “That helps stabilize blood sugar and give you energy so you don’t get hangry.”
What’s the big deal about stabilizing blood sugar? And what’s the downside to an endless bag of pretzels? Gina Keatley, a certified dietitian-nutritionist practicing in New York City, explains to Yahoo Life: “You can fall into a ‘carb coma’ after very starchy or sugar-filled snacks.” The right balance of nutrients—fiber, protein and fat—makes a huge difference.
And if you're tethered to your desk most of the day, no need to even leave home. Walmart has different ways for you to get your goods (either same- or next-day). You can pick up from your local store for free (with a $35 order) and an associate will load stuff directly into your trunk. If you'd rather remain on the couch, pay just $7.95 for contactless delivery. In a pinch? For an extra $10, use Express delivery and get your stuff in two hours or less.
And don't worry about freshness. Even if you order in advance, your items are hand-picked the same day. Walmart's Pickup & Delivery associates actually go through 'academy training' prior to being certified pickers, so basically they're going to get you the good stuff.
Prices are the same as those in the store and online. And if an item is not available, you have the ability to choose your preferred substitutions.
Here's to keeping WFH hangriness at bay.
Organic Honeycrisp, Two Pound Bag
Cording’s top picks are ‘super simple’ snacks, like half an apple with nut butter. These sweet, delicious organic honeycrisp apples help fill you up (with fiber) and make a perfect delivery system for almond or peanut butter (protein and fat).
RXBar Coconut Chocolate Real Food Protein Bar
RXBar Coconut Chocolate Real Food Protein Bars make it easy to grab a protein fix and get right back to work. Each serving has 12 grams of protein and zero grams of sugar, with a coconut chocolate flavor hit to brighten your mood.
Chobani Plain Non-Fat Greek Yogurt
Great for your gut microbiome, plain Greek yogurt, like Chobani’s version, is the perfect vehicle for fresh berries or raw nuts. And with 14 grams of protein, it’s a superstar in the healthy snack category.
Wholly Guacamole Minis
Portion size is a big challenge when snacking from home (at work the vending machine only gives you so much). Wholly Guacamole’s minis are right-sized, so you don’t have to worry about mindlessly working your way through a whole tub of guac. Pairs well with baby carrots.
Sabra Classic Hummus Singles
Each cup of Sabra Singles hummus has four grams of protein and three grams of fiber, for a savory snack at home or on your way to the market (never shop hungry!). Dip in celery sticks, Wasa bread or carrots for crunch.
Bolthouse Farms Carrot Chips
Just like ‘regular’ chips, only healthier, Bolthouse Farms’ carrot chips give you more nutrients per crunch. Dip in plain yogurt, salsa or hummus.
