Hear ye! Hear ye! This Roaring 20s-era castle is on the market in National City
NATIONAL CITY, Calif. (FOX 5/KUSI) — Described by its sellers as an “architectural masterpiece,” there’s a castle in National City that’s summoning new owners. Will it be you?
Originally built in the Roaring Twenties-era, this fortress was made for royalty, or at least for those who were — at the time — embracing an economic engine fueled by a time period in which America’s wealth doubled over a 10-year span.
The walls of the castles, especially the ballroom area, may have once been filled with people impacted by the onset of “consumer culture,” meaning they likely mirrored one another while sporting elegant fashion styles.

The estate on which the castle sits has a sprawling 8 acres, something most in the metropolitan area of San Diego would consider “gold” in the form of space. The view, however, could be considered one the castle’s most awing attributes.
“This castle is perched a top a hill that provides a 270 degree Westerly view of the Pacific Ocean and greater San Diego. There’s nowhere else in San Diego that offers this type of view, that’s completely unobstructed,” said David Hussain, a broker associate and team lead for Real Estate PRO Team.
The residence provides a “sense of escape,” while also being in close proximity to all San Diego has to offer.
Who first called this castle home? According to Hussain, it was commissioned in 1926 and finished in 1928 by a “wealthy” and “mysterious” public figure by the name of H. A. Collins.
“Its storied walls whisper tales of opulence. Soon after the untimely passing of Mr. Collins, it became the treasured estate of the Wellington family,” the real estate listing explained. “Renowned for their lavish soirées, the Wellingtons hosted the crème de la crème of Southern California, making this castle the epicenter of luxury and entertainment.”

The castle boasts two public architecture rooms, the first being a dancehall or entertaining room with a musicians balcony and an oversized fireplace. The second is a grand dining room, complete with hand laid onyx floors and nearly 18-foot-high exposed beam ceilings.
In total, there are five bedrooms and four bathrooms in the 5,766 square-foot space.
“Only a few families have called this historic castle home,” said Hussain. “And for the first time in over two decades, it’s available for sale.”
For those called to retrace the steps of this castle’s illustrious owners, the timeless beauty of this Roaring Twenties estate could be yours — if the price tag doesn’t startle you. It’s listed for a buck under $3 million.
