Helena Bonham Carter Is Behind Princess Margaret's Opinion on Charles and Diana's Marriage in The Crown
In the new season of The Crown, Prince Charles and Princess Diana say "I do" despite myriad red flags, and after much encouragement from the royal family—except for one Windsor, who voices concerns.
Helena Bonham Carter says she is responsible for her character Princess Margaret's words of warning, in advance of the Prince and Princess of Wales' royal wedding. "I like to credit myself with an idea," Bonham Carter said during a recent press conference, per People. "I said, 'Hang on, I'm not really part of this.' They all looked at me," Bonham Carter recalled.
"Maybe I've totally imagined this, but I said, 'Well, I'm not going to be encouraging an interference with a marriage when—back when I was Vanessa Kirby back in season one—my whole life was destroyed by my sister interfering with a marriage,'" she added, referencing how The Crown's Princess Margaret, then played by Kirby, was denied her chosen partner because he had been previously married.
The actress continued, "She saw Diana being picked up by the press as she was, and she was taken as a fashion template. But she also knew that this was going to be a honeymoon—being heralded by the press then quickly turn. It's a complicated thing, marriage into the royal family. It isn't just for an emotional... it's a job, and there's a duty. I think she can see that Diana is too young."
Unfortunately, as The Crown viewers well know, Margaret's assessment is all too accurate.
