Model Helena Christensen, 50, called 'too old' to wear sexy top: 'Slightly tragic'
Helena Christensen may be a supermodel, but even she is getting flak for stepping out in a sexy bustier.
The Danish beauty wore a black lace bustier paired with high-waisted jeans to fellow model Gigi Hadid’s denim-themed 24th birthday party on April 22. But the racy look fell flat with a fashion editor who called it “tacky” and argued that, at age 50, Christensen was “too old to wear that.”
Writing for the Daily Mail, former British Vogue editor-in-chief Alexandra Shulman shamed Christensen for her outfit, accusing her of looking like “the madam in a one-horse town.”
Shulman, 61, went on to argue that women of a certain age should know better than to wear sexy or revealing items.
“We might like to think that 70 is the new 40 and 50 the new 30 but our clothes know the true story,” she wrote, later adding, “Something you wore at 30 will never look the same on you 20 years later. Clothes don’t lie.”
She also wrote, “When women’s bodies no longer serve any child-bearing purpose, we find flaunting them disturbing and slightly tragic. I don’t claim that this is fair. But it’s true.”
It didn’t take long for Shulman’s remarks to generate some swift backlash. Christensen fired back at the criticism by sharing a photo of her wearing another bustier alongside pals Tali Lennox and Camilla St?rk.
“Let’s continue to elevate and support each other, all you beautiful, smart, fun, sexy, hardworking, talented, nurturing women out there,” she wrote, adding the hashtag #ooopssheworeabustieragain.
Her famous friends were quick to back her up.
“You are BEAUTIFUL inside and out,” wrote Edward Enninful, who replaced Shulman at British Vogue.
“She should be ashamed of herself,” fellow supermodel Linda Evangelista added. “You are a goddess.”
“Just read that article,” wrote model Karen Elson. “B*tch please ... you are on fire!”
“U always do, my beautiful friend,” Julianne Moore responded.
“How dare any woman shame another woman,” creative director Ronnie Cooke Newhouse said of Shulman’s takedown. “And how sad she has become so bitter and sunk to such a low level. You look amazing.”
Shulman has not yet addressed the backlash, though critics have flooded her Instagram page with comments like “I’m sorry Alexandra but you’re too old to wear this” and “You’re just too old to post on social media.”

Christensen may have the last laugh. According to her Instagram Stories, her St?rk & Christensen brand — whose swimsuit collection was just modeled by Brooke Shields — could be whipping up some new merchandise: bustiers.
