Here's how Corpus Christi will be celebrating the Fourth of July

The Fourth of July falls on a Thursday this year, meaning you need to set your holiday plans quickly.

The main event happening in Corpus Christi is the annual Mayor's Big Bang Celebration that occurs on the city's Bayfront in the downtown area. The event starts at 9:30 p.m. and is free.

If you plan on celebrating at home, remember that violators using fireworks inside the city may face up to a $2,000 fine for each opened package of fireworks. If you need to report fireworks in your neighborhood, call 361-886-2677. The Corpus Christi Police Department said 911 should not be used for firework-related complaints.

Before the spectacular evening show in downtown Corpus Christi, Nueces Brewing Co. will hold its Fajita BBQ Cookoff at 9 a.m. Chefs will compete for cash prizes and bragging rights. The entry fee is $60 per team. Judging and awards will take place at 2:30 p.m. For more information, visit nuecesbrewing.com.

While fajitas are being prepared, head over to Sherrill Veterans Memorial Park at 9:30 a.m. for the Veterans Affairs' Patriotic Ceremony at 222 S. Shoreline Blvd. The annual program will include a presentation of colors, a keynote speaker and a performance by the Veterans Band of Corpus Christi.

Shortly after, the Mayor's Cup Regatta will take place at 10 a.m. at the Corpus Christi Municipal Marina at the south end of the Lawrence Street T-Head. Watch as members of the Corpus Christi Yacht Club's Junior Sailing Team, along with local boat owners and sailors, compete in the race. Awards will be handed out at 1:30 p.m.

With the weather set to be in the 90s, as per normal in South Texas, be sure to cool off with a refreshing drink and get energized with a tasty dish during the Coastal Comida Fest. Starting at 1 p.m., head out to Water's Edge Park at 402 S. Shoreline Blvd. to enjoy dozens of food trucks, a mobile gaming unit, a beer garden, a vendor market, live music and more. The festival is free of charge and will wrap up at 9 p.m.

Then make your way to the Bayfront for the annual fireworks show. Spectators will be able to view the display all along the Bayfront from North Beach to the north side of Cole Park.

Don't want to watch the show from the Bayfront? With a paid reservation, you can head to the Flight Deck of the USS Lexington at 7 p.m. and enjoy a prime viewing spot for the fireworks show. To purchase tickets, and for more information, visit usslexington.com.
