Here's What Fans Are Saying About the Jake Paul-Mike Tyson Fight Announcement

The boxing match of a lifetime was announced on Thursday when YouTuber-turned-pro boxer Jake Paul will face off against former heavyweight champion Mike Tyson on July 20 at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, TX. The highly-anticipated fight will stream exclusively on Netflix, which will mark the streamer's third live sporting event and first combat sports match.

Paul has come a long way since making his professional boxing debut in early 2020. In just over four years, the 27-year-old has amassed an impressive 9–1 boxing record, with six knockouts. Tyson, 57, on the other hand, has won 50 out of 58 of his professional fights with 44 wins by knockout.

Interestingly enough, it won't be the first time Tyson and Paul have appeared on a boxing card together. Paul fought in the co-main event of the exhibition match between Mike Tyson and Roy Jones Jr. in November 2020. That was Paul's second-ever pro fight, in which he defeated former NBA player Nate Robinson by knockout in the second round. The match between Tyson and Jones, which was Tyson's first since 2006, resulted in a split draw.

“It’s crazy to think that in my second pro fight, I went viral for knocking out Nate Robinson on Mike Tyson’s undercard,” Paul said in a statement. “Now, less than four years later, I’m stepping up to face Tyson myself to see if I have what it takes to beat one of boxing’s most notorious fighters and biggest icons.

“I’m very much looking forward to stepping into the ring with Jake Paul," Tyson said in his own statement. “He’s grown significantly as a boxer over the years, so it will be a lot of fun to see what the will and ambition of a ‘kid’ can do with the experience and aptitude of a GOAT. It’s a full circle moment that will be beyond thrilling to watch; as I started him off on his boxing journey on the undercard of my fight with Roy Jones and now I plan to finish him.”

The one-time undisputed heavyweight champion will have nearly three decades on Paul, who will be 28 at the time of the fight. One might think—given Paul's record and Tyson's age—that, on paper, the match would more or less be fair, or even tilted in Paul's favor.

Yet, after the news was revealed, the consensus on social media seemed to be that Paul was a dead man walking. After all, the man was given the nickname of "baddest man on the planet" for a reason. "I wouldn’t fight Mike Tyson if he was bed ridden in hospice care," quipped X user Bunkie Perkins, who was just one of many to weigh in.
