Oprah on Why Mental Wellness Is So Important NowHearst Owned

Every Sunday, Oprah is setting an intention for the upcoming week—exclusively for Oprah Insiders. Join us for reflections on themes like resilience, integrity, self-care, and more. This week, Oprah shares a message about the importance of mental wellness.

Hi everybody! Happy Sunday.

As you may know, May is Mental Health Awareness Month. And it’s a time for all of us to work on breaking the stigma surrounding mental illness and focus on our mental well-being. I think it’s so important—especially in these times that have challenged our mental wellness in so many ways. Did y’all know that one in five people in the United States suffers from some form of mental illness—one in five. So that means either you are or you know somebody who is dealing with it.

What I know do and believe for sure is that we're all on the spectrum, and at any given day and time you may be feeling 100% or not 100%. You know, I have spent a lot of time on psych wards, unfortunately, dealing with friends or family members who were suffering.

So in an effort to bring mental illness to the forefront, Prince Harry and I have partnered together for a documentary series called The Me You Can’t See, which begins streaming on AppleTV+ this Friday May 21st. As an advocate for mental health, Prince Harry has been very open about his own personal struggles, and what we’re hoping to do is further the conversation through a lens of compassion and honesty. And throughout all of the series of The Me You Can’t See you’ll hear from celebrities like Lady Gaga and Glenn Close—plus a lot of people from around the world whose names you don’t know, but who have been dealing with their own mental wellness, mental illness issues. So what we’re hoping is that after watching this series, you will be empowered to have conversations, to reach out to friends, and be able to receive the messages with grace and empathy.

I hope you’ll tune in so that together, all of us begin to build a stronger sense of humanity and community because we all truly deserve to be able to live our best lives. And everybody goes through something.

I wish you a wonderful week ahead. Be well! And be sure and watch: The Me You Can’t See on AppleTV+ beginning Friday May 21st.
