Here's How Season 3 Ended for Every Character in "13 Reasons Why"
SPOILER ALERT: Major spoilers for season 3 of 13 Reasons Why below!
The students at Liberty High have gone through a lot over three seasons of 13 Reasons Why. They've all experienced a series of traumatic events, including the deaths of three of their classmates. With just one season left, season 3 showcased how many of the characters have evolved, some for the better, like Tyler who's working on his mental health; others for worse, like Alex who possibly murdered someone. Season 3 also introduced a new character, Ani Achola, who's now the school's resident detective and new narrator of the series. Like all the episodes before, season 3 took us on a rollercoaster of emotions and get ready because season 4 will probably take us on one final ride. If you need a refresher on the show's most recent season, here's how every main character's storyline ended in season 3.
Clay Jensen
Season 3 was definitely a rough one for Clay Jensen. He spent season 3 trying to convince others that he wasn't Bryce's killer to no avail because he ends up getting arrested for the murder in episode 12.
But in episode 13, he's released thanks to new character Ani's help. Ani steered the police towards pursuing Monty as a suspect. Towards the end of the show, Clay spends Thanksgiving with his family and friends, heads to see Tyler's photography show and chats with Jessica and Justin about just wanting some happiness after all the recent drama.
Alex Standall
Alex Standall also had a very rough season. In the season's final episode, it's revealed that Alex is the one who killed Bryce. Though Alex is the real murderer, Deputy Standall pinned the murder on Monty after Ani's statements, essentially preventing Alex from being charged.
Deputy Standall has a hunch his son committed the murder, but in order to protect his son, he remains quiet about what he thinks he knows. In fact, at one point, Deputy Standall heads back to the house to burn some of Alex's clothes.
But Alex is still plagued by Bryce's death, asking Jessica, "How are we going to live with this?" Her reply was, “We’re survivors, you and me. FML forever?”
Jessica Davis
In season 3, Jessica finds some positive outlets for the trauma she's dealt with. She leads a club at Liberty High for sexual assault survivors and even becomes student body president. She also gets publicly back together with her boyfriend Justin.
But Jessica also had her fair share of trouble in season 3. She was a witness to Bryce's murder and didn't do anything to stop him from dying. But it seems like Jessica's suppressing her feelings about being a witness to Bryce's murder because in the show's last episode she declares that she's ready for some happiness.
Justin Foley
In season 3, we still see Justin having trouble with staying clean. He's smoking heroin and popping pills that Bryce gave him. He's also selling drugs in order to pay back his debt to his mom's ex-boyfriend, Seth.
But towards the end of the season, Justin finally admits that he needs help, demonstrating his personal growth. Justin is determined to clean himself of his drug addiction.
Seth also ends up getting arrested for breaking his parole, meaning that Justin is also free from Seth's hold over him. He even gets back with Jessica. The two become extremely close, as Justin is open with her about also being a sexual assault survivor.
Bryce Walker
Season 3 really tried to humanize Bryce, despite his anger issues. Season 3 showed Bryce attempting to apologize to Jessica and Hannah's mom, but Bryce ultimately ends up getting killed off the show in this season.
He's murdered after he's pushed into the river by Alex while he's injured. Jessica was also there and she didn't do anything to help him. Bryce becomes injured after getting beat up by Zach, who Bryce injured during the homecoming game for supporting his ex-girlfriend through an abortion of Bryce's baby. Most of season 3 revolves around trying to figure out who actually killed Bryce. His murder ends up being pinned on Monty.
Ani Achola
Ani was involved in a major cliffhanger at the end of season 3. Ani's new to Liberty High, but that didn't stop her from becoming a part of all the drama that's ensued among the school's students and developing a romantic relationship with Clay. Throughout much of the season, Ani bluntly confronts the other students about traumatic events in their own lives as she tries to figure out what really happened to Bryce.
Ani ultimately uncovers the truth, but doesn't reveal everything she knows to the police. Instead, knowing that Monty was already dead, Ani pointed the police towards him as a suspect in Bryce's murder.
But there's one loose end. Monty did have an alibi. At the end of season 3, Winston, a witness to Monty's alibi, confronts Ani about the story she told the police.
Nora Walker
Nora Walker, Bryce's mom, has to deal with the deaths of both her son and her father in season 3, both with who she had complicated relationships. Though, in season 3 she also tries to reconcile both.
As she sat with her father while he was on his deathbed, Nora told her father that she knew that he tried his best to be a good father. After Bryce's death, Nora also visits the place where Bryce died with flowers, presumably in order to properly say goodbye and reconcile her troubled relationship with her son. Nora doesn't know the true details surrounding Bryce's death and thinks the murder has been solved.
Olivia Baker
In season 2, Hannah's mom, Olivia, ends up moving to New York because it was Hannah's dream. But in season 3, she comes back to town because the police want to question her regarding Bryce's death.
While she's in town, Olivia meets up with Nora to tell her that she empathizes with her as she's also lost a child, but Nora, full of grief and anger, tells her that it is not the same because her son was murdered. Olivia also tells Nora that punishing her son's murderer unfortunately won't bring him home.
After the conversation, Olivia returns to New York, her new home.
Tony Padilla
If you recall, Bryce's father ended up calling Immigration and Customs Enforcement to report Tony's undocumented family. In season 3, Tony's family unfortunately gets deported by ICE, forcing Tony to live life on his own in the U.S.
Tony is sort of adopted into the Jensen family, spending Thanksgiving with them. In one scene, he skypes with his parents as his boyfriend Caleb works on a tamale recipe.
Tyler Down
This season we see Tyler healing from some of the traumatic things that happened to him in season 2, including Monty's assault on him. In season 3, Tyler takes a photo of himself everyday to document his own growth.
In the season finale, Tylers unveils photos of the people who have helped him in a photography show at Monet's, which Clay who was instrumental in stopping Tyler from committing a school shooting last season, also attends.
Monty de la Cruz
Bryce wasn't the only character killed off in season 3. Though the details regarding his death weren't mentioned, several characters alluded to the fact that Monty was dead. Monty was in jail awaiting his sentence for Tyler's assault and it's presumed he was killed in prison.
Starting in season 2, we see that Monty is having trouble coming to terms with his sexuality, something further explored in season 3, when Monty hooks up with Winston, who's a witness to Monty's alibi, meaning he knows that Monty wasn't the one who killed Bryce.
At the end of season 3, Winston confronts Ani about placing the blame on Monty, creating a major cliffhanger as we head into the show's final season.
Zach Dempsey
Every character in 13 Reasons Why experienced their fair share of drama in season 3 and Zach was no different. His knee injury means his football career is basically over and he's no longer the team captain.
Earlier in the season, Zach tries to confess to Bryce's murder thinking that he's the one that killed him after he beat him up and left him stranded on the dock unable to walk. But Deputy Standall tells Zach that Bryce died by drowning, so he actually wasn't the person who killed Bryce.
In the finale, Zach congratulates Tyler on his photography show.
Chloe Rice
In season 3, we learn that Chloe has broken up with Bryce and switched schools. Her season 2 storyline ended in a cliffhanger. Chloe was pregnant with Bryce's child.
In season 3, we see Chloe go through the process of getting information on her options, specifically abortion. Though she goes to a dupe clinic where they try to convince her not to go through the process, Chloe eventually decided to abort her pregnancy.
Deputy Standall
In season 3, Deputy Standall is responsible for solving Bryce's murder. Though it's not confirmed he knows it was his son Alex, there are hints that point to the deputy knowing that his son was involved.
But he ignores all these signs when Ani tries to pin the murder on Monty. The deputy closes the case and can later be seen burning some of Alex's clothes, further reiterating that he probably knew his son had something to do with Bryce's murder.
But he doesn't realize that the case still has loose ends. Monty had an alibi and Winston can confirm it. At the end of season 3, Winston confronts Ani about her lies.
Charlie St. George
Charlie's also a new character on 13 Reasons Why season 3. He's a jock, but his ways seem to differ from those displayed by the other jocks. Even though he's friends with Monty, Charlie offers to help Tyler press charges on Monty over his assault.
He also helps the others frame Monty for Bryce's death by putting a tape Bryce made for Jessica into Monty's locker. We might see more of him in season 4.
Courtney Crimsen
Though Courtney played a much bigger role in earlier seasons of 13 Reasons Why, her appearance in season 3 is relatively brief. She appears when she asks Clay to take Ani on a tour of the school and from her mention of a meeting with a recruiter from Wellesley College, it's possible she went away to school.
