Here's the Truth About Where 'Sullivan's Crossing' Is Filmed
We're more than halfway through the first season of Sullivan's Crossing, and it's fair to say that the drama only gets more intense by the minute.
As the Canadian drama explores the life of neurosurgeon Maggie Sullivan (Morgan Kohan) as she flees to her childhood home after being sued for negligence, folks can't stop tuning in to see her interact with those from her past (and, maybe, her future). Whether it be repairing her strained relationship with her father Sully (Scott Patterson) or seeing sparks fly with Cal Jones (Chad Michael Murray), we can't stop watching to see what happens next.
But there's another element of the show viewers can't get over, and it's the incredible backdrop for all the drama. The mountains, the lake, the clear blue skies — all of us are wondering where is this place, and how fast can we get there?
Where is Sullivan's Crossing filmed?
Similar to shows like Virgin River (fun fact: both series are based on books by author Robyn Carr), Sullivan's Crossing films in Canada. But where Virgin River's backdrop is Vancouver, Sullivan's Crossing's home is in Halifax, Nova Scotia. So the show films where the story takes place, which is pretty amazing, even if Sullivan's Crossing itself is fictional.
When showrunner Roma Roth spoke to Variety about how the setting of the hit drama came to be, she said it came from a want to be somewhat different from what fans saw in Virgin River. "To ensure the show would feel distinctive from [Carr's] other adaptation... I decided to set it in Nova Scotia for Nova Scotia," she said in August 2022. "Having been born and raised in Canada, it’s always been a personal goal of mine to create and write a Canadian content show that would reach a global audience."
While fans are enamored with the outdoor scenery of Sullivan's Crossing, the cast is equally loving the beauty of the site. When Chad spoke to Good Housekeeping in October about filming the show, he couldn't help but gush about how much he enjoyed filming in Nova Scotia.
"It's the greatest, genuinely," he shared at the time. "The scenery is stunning and it's like, 'Why not surround yourself with kind, loving people and beautiful scenery and picturesque landscapes?'"
What's more, Scott had similar sentiments when he spoke to Decider. "This is tops. This is a beautiful place," he said. "I mean every day, if we’re not on the stage, we’re out in nature. And even surrounding the soundstage are wonderful nature views. The people here are very warm and welcoming. So, I can see how Sullivan’s Crossing really translates here and borrows from Canadian culture as well, because it’s so welcoming and warm."
So, are there specific places fans of Sullivan's Crossing can venture to after watching the episodes? According to Parade, the show has numerous shooting locations for folks to see after the fact, including Beaver Bank, Shubie Park and Oakfield Provincial Park.
