Here's Why Black Widow's Time Period Could be Very Significant

Ever since that happened in Avengers: Endgame, Marvel fans have been wondering just what the Black Widow solo movie would be about.

We didn't get too many details when the movie was officially announced at Comic-Con, but it was at least confirmed that Black Widow wouldn't take place before the Avengers were even a thing, as previously assumed.

Instead, the movie will take place between Captain America: Civil War and Avengers: Infinity War. That's a period of around one year based on the official MCU timeline – and it could be a very significant time period for Black Widow to take place.

If you need a refresher of Captain America: Civil War, the huge airport battle saw Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson) let Captain America (Chris Evans) and the Winter Soldier (Sebastian Stan) escape.

Black Widow had to go on the run after T'Challa (Chadwick Boseman) told Ross (William Hurt) what she did, and this is where we expect her solo movie to start.

It seems her exile leads her back to Budapest where she reunites with Yelena (Florence Pugh) who has a link to Black Widow's past. So we expect to see some flashbacks to her Red Room training, but largely, the main focus of the movie will be her time in exile.

Around the same time, Captain America was busy freeing the rest of his Civil War team from the Raft. Black Widow was never captured (as far as we know), so it makes sense that she's going it alone during this time.

However, as we know from Avengers: Infinity War, Black Widow did eventually meet up again with Cap's team during her time in exile, eventually reuniting with the whole Avengers team before Thanos dusted half of them away.

So could it be that Black Widow will feature this reunion with Cap, resulting in a surprise appearance from Chris Evans?

It's unlikely, sure, especially since we'd have probably had some sort of set leak by now if a major star like Evans had been spotted during filming. What's more, Avengers: Endgame brought Cap's story to an end and crowned a new Captain America, so it'd be a weird coda if original Cap made even a cameo appearance.

However, you can't entirely rule it out if Marvel wants to directly tie Black Widow into the MCU.

The Comic-Con teaser started with Tony Stark's warning to Black Widow at the end of Civil War ("they're coming for you"). Maybe there will be something similar in the movie, utilising some unused or former footage of Cap with Black Widow.

Were it a full-on prequel movie, then we wouldn't even entertain the possibility of a major MCU cameo in Black Widow. But given the notable time period, there's always the chance that Marvel has something fan-pleasing ready for us.

It's a stretch but, even just a few weeks ago, so was the idea of Natalie Portman returning to the MCU...

Black Widow is out on May 1, 2020.
