Here's Why Dua Lipa Skipped the 2022 VMAs

Where in the world is Dua Lipa?

The pop star was nowhere to be found at the 2022 MTV Video Music Awards tonight, despite being nominated in five categories. Her reason for skipping the festivities is actually pretty reasonable, though: She was busy celebrating a friend's wedding in France.

Yesterday, Lipa was among the star-studded guest list for the elegant nuptials of Jacquemus founder Simon Porte Jacquemus and his longtime partner Marco Maestri, which took place in Charleval, France. For the occasion, she wore a delicate sheer white dress designed by Jacquemus, along with mismatched floral statement earrings, white heels, and a black handbag.

The singer has five nominations at tonight's ceremony in the categories of Song of the Year, Best Collaboration, Best Art Direction, and Best Visual Effects.

"Sweetest Pie"—her collaboration for Megan Thee Stallion's lead single off her second studio album, Traumazine—has earned three nominations. The song's music video was a tour de force of fantastical fashion, with both Lipa and Megan performing as sultry witches who lure and enchant men into a forest with the intention of cannibalizing them. (Think Hansel and Gretel, but with latex, jewels, and so many corsets.)

The rapper previously talked about the meaning behind the video on Twitter, writing, "The symbolism of the video was how when men come for me I eat they ass up every time and even when y'all go on y'all's witch hunts attacking women for whatever reasons y'all make up we still rise from the ashes stronger than ever."
