Here's Why Girls On Instagram Are Rubbing Garlic On Their Faces
Instagram is a breeding ground for the hottest, most bizarre new beauty trends. It's on Insta that we discovered weird contouring practices, jaw-dropping eyeshadow art, and all the wildest nail trends.
Lately, rubbing food on your face has become the latest new crazy beauty trend. Girls have used onion slices to make their brows grow (even though it probz doesn't work and isn't a great idea) and now beauty grammers are testing the ~skin healing powers~ of garlic by rubbing it on their zits. Yep, garlic – the super smelly ingredient in pizza that makes a post-slice makeout sesh basically unbearable.
According to beauty vlogger, Farah Dhukhai, it really works. She says rubbing a sliced garlic clove on your pimple will help it to dry up almost instantly.
We asked to Dr. Amy Wechsler, a dermatologist in NYC, about it and she said this strange hack might actually be legit. Even though the effects of garlic on skin haven't yet been studied, Dr. Wechsler says, "Allicin is the active ingredient in garlic. Allicin has anti-inflammatory properties, so it's possible that applying some could take down the inflammation."
If you're planing on giving this trick a try, just make sure to stay alert and stop using it if you notice your skin has a negative reaction. And if the strong odor is a deal-breaker, don't worry, there are a ton of other ways to treat your acne that don't involve garlic.
