Here’s Why Kate Middleton Started Making Everyone Call Her Catherine
Kate Middleton allegedly tried to get her friends to start calling her “Catherine” two years before her engagement to Prince William.
The attempted rebranding was reportedly due to Kate “preparing for her future role.”
You know that feeling when you’re dating a prince and your friends back home won’t stop calling you by your nickname? Kate Middleton truly understands your plight.
Apparently, this future queen had a feeling she was about to live a life of tiaras and freakish amounts of corgis, because she allegedly asked all her friends to start calling her “Catherine” while she was dating Prince William. Like...a full two years before they even got engaged.
The Sun resurfaced an incredibly amusing Sunday Express column from 2008, where royal expert Adam Helliker said, “I hear that in the past few weeks, the former accessories buyer has quietly informed friends that she would like to drop the informal ‘Kate’ and in future wishes to be known by her full name: Catherine.” You see, apparently she was “preparing for her future role,” ahem.
Meanwhile, reporter Daniela Elsner claimed Kate told her friends about the rebranding over email in a “gentle” and “very jokey” way. I can only assume it went something like, “Lol, probably gonna be queen eventually, so if you could call me Catherine, that’d be great, bye!”
For what it’s worth, apparently Prince Charles’s press secretary denied these reports at the time, but either way, the name Kate stuck—and it’s super cute, so no harm done!
