HGTV host Egypt Sherrod shares her easy tips for making edible ornaments

Eqypt Sherrod, HGTV host and queen of home renovation, harbors a secret identity: “I’m also the queen of holiday decorating,” she says. This year, Sherrod wants to help people find simple, affordable ways to make their home look a little more festive without needing to spend a lot of time or money rounding up items. So she’s sharing a few of her favorite tips for how to use edible ingredients to create holiday decor this season.

EGYPT SHERROD: Hey, it's Egypt Sherrod, the queen of home. I'm also the queen of holiday decorating. I've got a few really cool tricks that I'm going to show you to make your house a little bit more festive, stress-free.

So for the first two tips, we're going to use the same exact ingredients. So you'll need some kiwi. I'd say get about 10. A pomegranate. Fresh cinnamon sticks. And a red pepper.

The very first thing we're going to make is a read made out of kiwi that we can decorate our plates with. You can put your cranberry sauce in the middle. I like them firm, because they're easy to decorate with.

Stack them on top of each other nice around the plate so that they overlap. Cut yourself off a nice piece of the red pepper. I like to carve out what looks like a ribbon. You can get as detailed with this as you want or not.

We have pomegranates, and we're just going to drop them on ever so slightly. And voila, we have a beautiful wreath. Gorgeous.

We're going to make our kiwi Christmas tree now. It's a different take on a fruit platter. So I just lined up all of the beautifully cut kiwi. We'll put the big, beautiful one at the top.

Our cinnamon stick goes right here at the bottom. I'm going to use our pepper again. We've got our bow. We've got ourselves a beautiful Christmas tree.

All right, tip number three. We're making holiday potpourri-- and it is going to smell delicious-- out of food and items that you can actually find right outside, perhaps in your front yard. A glass vase or jar, definitely something you can see through. Lining the bottom with a few pine cones-- some from outside, some I bought from the store because they were beautiful already. Spray-painted white and red.

So I just clipped some pieces of juniper off the tree outside. They smell amazing. I took a nice fresh ripe orange. As the citrus starts to drop off and the jar dries out, it's going to smell so amazing.

Fried cranberries. Sprinkle them in. Fresh cinnamon sticks. Throw a few more pine cones in. I want some more green in here. Some dried apple. I'm going to take a few more oranges. And juniper right around the top so it hangs out the top of the jar.
