HGTV Star Jasmine Roth Shares "Big News" about Major Life Changes
It's a season of change for Jasmine Roth! The HGTV star (you recognize her from Help! I Wrecked My House, Rock the Block, and Hidden Potential) is expecting her second child later this year, and she and her family (and her business!) are planning an out-of-state move. But she's managing to keep things in perspective with her refreshing "Build Your Happy" mindset. She sat down with Country Living to talk about living in the moment and enjoying small victories.
Jasmine made the decision to put her beloved Huntington Beach, California, house (known as the Roth Homestead) on the market. She and her husband, Brett, and their 4-year-old daughter, Hazel, will be moving to Park City, Utah, where they're in the process of building a new home. Park City has a special place in Jasmine's heart—Brett grew up vacationing there, and the couple got married in Park City in 2013. In 2015, they bought a second home in Utah, and Jasmine has been a part of the building and real estate market ever since. Still, selling the Roth Homestead is bittersweet.
On Saying Goodbye to the Roth Homestead
In addition to her HGTV appearances, Jasmine is the owner and founder of Built Custom Homes. Four years ago, she built the Huntington Beach house for her family and filled it with delightful details (take a tour on her website). Jasmine says, "It took me three years to build this house and we've lived here for four years. It's ground-up new construction, so every single decision had to be made. We've had a lot of firsts here. We've had a lot of memories. My daughter was 3 months old when we moved in. She's now 4. So this is the home that she's known."
The house is now on the market, listed for $6.45 million. Jasmine says, "It's definitely bittersweet. It's a great family home. So I'm really excited to see who ends up here and how it's received." She explains that she did make some changes before listing the property: "I didn't change everything but I did change a lot of things for resale value. I simplified the design. It still has a lot of personality and the curiosities, like the hidden room, the hidden paper towel holder, the hidden dog area, but we pared it down so that it would appeal to more people and also families that are in all different stages."
On the Next Chapter in Utah
The Roths will make Park City their full-time residence. Jasmine explains, "We are building a new home in Utah. I'm trying to finish it before my baby arrives. I really put some pressure on myself there. It's slated to be done at the end of July, beginning of August." The home they're building was 50-75% complete when they bought it, so Jasmine wasn't able to change the floor plan or add any hidden rooms this time around. But, she says, "There will be some cool features, and there will be some things that I've never done in a house before. So I'm excited about that from a design standpoint. I also went with a really different color palette. I'm excited about that. Just kind of shaking it up a bit, trying something new."
With the move, Jasmine's "California casual" design style will evolve, while maintaining a relaxed family vibe. She says, "In Utah, there's a lot to think about just from the weather. You need trays to put your shoes on and you need the warmth and the coziness. It's cold in the winters but it's also really warm there in the summer.
"I love being able to kind of lean into the landscape and the natural textures that are already there," she continues. "It's going to feel cozier, it's going to feel mountain. It's going to feel more seasonal."
Expect one major change in Jasmine's Park City style: "I use carpet there. I don't use carpet in California. I'll use a rug but I don't install carpet near the beach because it just doesn't work. But in Utah, I think carpet has a really nice place—it just feels cozier. So yeah, I'm back in the carpet game."
On Building Her Happy
As she approaches her 40th birthday, Jasmine is facing these life changes with grace and keeping her "Build Your Happy" mantra top of mind. "It's so important to take a moment to think about that and ask ourselves, 'how am I building my happy?' Because it's so easy to get caught up in the day to day of what's next? What do I need to get done?" Jasmine takes time to focus on the journey rather than the destination and "celebrate the small moments and the little wins along the way."
She continues, "It's about realizing that happiness is made up of many incremental moments and not taking them for granted. I've been making a pointed effort to spend a lot of time with my daughter, a lot of time with my husband, and just slow down a little bit. I'm taking a minute to pay attention to my pregnancy. I think it's easy to gloss over the fact that this is a miracle that's happening and just to take a minute and give my body some grace and myself some time to say 'good job.'"
On Her HGTV Future
Season 4 of Help! I Wrecked My House wrapped up in January, and, due to her pregnancy and move, Jasmine is taking a break from filming the fan-favorite show. She explains, "When I started season one of that show, I was very pregnant, and we did it and it was amazing, and I don't regret it. But at the same time, I'm about to be 40 years old and I have a 4-year-old and this time around. I was like, I don't think I should film and move and do all these things." She says that HGTV has been extremely supportive, but there is nothing to report at this time.
"I enjoy doing all of the other HGTV shows where I get to judge or I get to be a contestant or any of those. They keep me busy, that's for sure."
