HGTV's Erin Napier Reveals She Was Bullied as a Child: "I Was a Bit Strange and Introverted"
In addition to having her own show on HGTV, Erin Napier recently revealed that had soulful pipes and guitar skills to match her design chops. You likely already caught her recent performance of "Amazing Grace" on Hometown, because it set the internet ablaze.
But Erin didn't always exude confidence before she had her own TV show. The Mississippi-based designer just revealed in a new interview that she was bullied for four years, starting in the fourth grade.
“I was a bit strange and introverted,” Erin told Southern Living. “Library time was my favorite. I had a fossil collection. I would put together natural history dioramas in old shoeboxes, or I’d stay home and make a tiger costume. That was really exciting to me.”
Unlike other kids her age, Erin said she wasn't interested in clothes or makeup. Even when she was invited to slumber parties, other girls would pick on her.
“One time, during hide-and-seek, I was it," Erin added. "And they all left me there and went to the house next door."
Those memories guide Erin today as she raises her two-year-old daughter Helen with husband Ben. Erin hopes Helen will also "a little bit weird," and that's a good thing.
“As her introverted mom, I’ll try to nurture that. If she’s the life of the party, so be it," Napier said. "Like me, she loves music—Elton John most of all—and she dances whenever she hears him. I’m excited about that. I hope she’ll be a little weird. I think weird people are wonderful, and we’re all a bit weird.”
