High school football player goes viral for his rendition of the national anthem
Jackson Dean Nicholson might be the star defensive end of his high school‘s football team. But that’s not the only talent he showcased on the field during a home game on Friday, as he stood on the 50-yard line with a guitar to sing the national anthem.
A video posted on YouTube shows the 17-year-old from Gambrills, Md., standing in front of his school’s band and cheer squad, wearing his Wildcats football uniform. And although it’s evident from the start that he’s gearing up to sing in front of a crowd on the bleachers, what comes out of his mouth is entirely unexpected.
Now, more than 77,000 people have viewed the video, with many sharing their disbelief that Nicholson isn’t yet famous.
“This is quintessentially American. It’s unique, original and [sung] with extraordinary control and emotion. Bravo young man bravo,” one person commented. Another said, “I’m speechless! You’ve got such a talent! Gave me chills!”
Turns out that it’s not the first time Nicholson has sung in front of this football crowd or posted a video to YouTube showcasing his talent. But this is likely to be his big break.
The hopeful singer didn’t immediately respond to Yahoo Lifestyle’s request for comment. However, he did tell the Capital Gazette that he is nearly ready to leave high school and football behind to pursue a singing career.
“This is my last year — then I’m done. I’ve got until January; I’ll have all my credits done and I only have to be enrolled for this semester,” he told the publication. “I got a waive by my principal and she’s very supportive of what I do. I’m going to go for it.”
