High school investigating racist Snapchat video sent to black teen

A Missouri high school district is disciplining a student who appeared in a Snapchat video saying, “A rope, a tree, hang the n*****.”

Cassia Shaffer, 18, a black student Liberty North High School in Missouri, told Fox 4 Kansas City that a longtime friend (who is not in the video) sent it to her. “We were Snapchatting like we usually do,” she told the news station. “It was out of the blue because we go from, ‘What are you doing?’ to that.”

“If you take the N-word out of it, he said ‘a rope and a tree, hang,’ so basically you are saying to me either that you want me killed or you want to kill me,” Shaffer told Fox 4 Kansas City.

Shaffer posted the video on Snapchat and according to screenshots on Twitter, allegedly between Shaffer and the boy in the video, he begged for her to remove it. “I feel very bad and I feel sick to my stomach,” the boy allegedly wrote.

“If you’re low-key racist, then you should’ve never talked to me, period,” Cassia allegedly responded.

Yahoo Lifestyle could not reach Shaffer for comment, and the teen’s mother also did not respond.

Liberty Public Schools spokesperson Dallas Ackerman sent Yahoo Lifestyle a letter from principal Martin Jacobs to parents.

“Over the weekend it was brought to our attention that a student at LNHS sent a racial Snapchat video to a classmate,” wrote Jacobs. “This incident has since received attention on social media. I wanted to personally reach out to emphasize to our families that we denounce the use of racially offensive language, not only here at Liberty North, but across Liberty Public Schools. We will be handling this situation with the families involved in the coming days, with appropriate discipline handed down, per Board Policy.”
