A teacher who dragged a student across the classroom by her braids has been reassigned while the district and a state agency investigates.

Video taken Mar. 6 at First Coast High School in Jacksonville, Fla., and published on the Instagram account @duvalpromo shows a Spanish teacher dragging a sophomore student by her long braids in front of the classroom.

The student, whose name wasn’t released by First Coast News, told the outlet that she swiped the teacher’s laptop because she was accused of misbehaving. “I grabbed the computer because she said she was going to write me up, and I told her to write me up because I didn’t do it,” the teen said.

The teacher then grabbed her braids, pulling her across the room, according to the student. She did leave, but she later returned for her backpack. When a friend let her into the classroom, the friend and the teacher fought until the student was forced out the door.

“I do not mind you disciplining them, do that, but do not put your hands on my child,” the mother of the girl whose hair was pulled told First Coast News. “I know that everyone is human, everyone gets heated, everybody gets irritated, but you still have to learn how to walk away.”

The mom filed a police report with the Duval County Public Schoolspolice department, which could not provide public records to Yahoo Lifestyle, due to the active investigation.

A district representative tells Yahoo Lifestyle:

Duval County Public Schools is currently investigating this incident, and the teacher has been reassigned pending the outcome of the investigation. Additionally, the Department of Children and Families has been contacted. As it is an active investigation, I am unable to provide additional comment.”

Principal Timothy Simmons said, in part, in a recorded phone call to parents, “The school district’s professional standards division is conducting an investigation and the department of children and families has also been contacted.” He continued, “Because this is under investigation, I cannot say more, but I do want you to know that the teacher has been reassigned from the classroom pending the outcome of the investigation. First Coast High School and Duval County Public Schools have very high standards for professional conduct, and we take all such matters very seriously.”
